| | Fish Keeper | Jaw Problems.... My poor little "Rainbow" has a severely swollen jaw. I thought it looked a little puffy a few days ago, but now it is so swollen he can't eat. He tries, but he can't seem to do it. Tonight I noticed what appears to be an open sore on it. It is VERY swollen with a reddish white spot on it. It is only on the left side, his right side of the jaw looks fine. I've attached a few pictures, some are hard to see, but it's so hard to take pictures of him, he's so camera shy!
Any suggestions of what I should do? He's currently in the cycled hospital tank, water is 80 degrees. Should I medicate? With what? Anything else I can do to help him?
Note: The first picture is kind of blurry, but you can see the size/shape of it. (My camera lens was really dusty, so it made everything look gross!)
The second picture shows the red/white spot on his jaw. The top spot is of a pellet he is trying to eat, the lower one is the open sore I am concerned about. Last edited by mlinden84; August 15th, 2008 at 11:42 PM.

| | Master Of Fish Poo! | Hmm.. to come out so quick, it could be either an ulcer or a swelling from an infection maybe. I'd start the Vita-Chem, Fish Protector & Garlic Guard daily and Triple Sulfa. For feeding him, freeze-dried daphnia may help him eat more easily. |

I think that is the only medicine I actually have here! I have been adding vita-chem and garlic guard every day, but I don't have fish protector.
He's in the 10 gallon hospital tank now, before he was in the 90 gallon with cory cats, clown loaches, and a very lazy pleco.
He has refused daphnia... for some reason none of my fish like it (hikari brand). I did try tropical flakes and he was able to eat the flakes, so I think I will go get some betta flakes today, so he can get some nutrition.
He is still very active. I don't think it is bothering him as much as it is me, but it looks so painful! |

| | Fish Keeper | No improvement so far with the triple sulfa. If anything it looks like it's getting worse. How long until it starts to look better? |

Thanks for reminding me though... back when I used to use carbon all the time I would medicate and forget it was in there!
I guess I'm just impatient and wanting him to feel better fast. He just looks so miserable! |

| | Master Of Fish Poo! | Yea, I rarely see any effect until at least the 3rd day of triple sulfa, and I have had to go as far as a 3rd course of it before. I hope you're seeing results today. |

| | Fish Keeper | Poor little guy is just not getting better. The swelling has gotten so much worse... and pieces of the white chunk are falling off (for someone who watches animal surgeries every day, its pretty bad if it grosses me out!)
He is still eating fine (flakes and frozen blood worms) and is just as active as usual.
I have completed 2 full treatments (4 days each) as recommended of Triple Sulfa. Is there anything else that will help? |

| | Master Of Fish Poo! | Poor guy, I wish that the sulfa had worked. I doubt a 3rd course would help much and a different antibiotic family, like a tetracycline or partial doses of kanamyacin (kanaplex) might be the next step to try after clearing the sulfa with some fresh carbon. |

I've been running the fresh carbon in the filter for about an hour... how long does it take to remove all the triple sulfa from the water? (I did a 25% water change too). |

| | Master Of Fish Poo! | I think 2 or 3 hours is plenty of time to clear meds with carbon. Good luck with the tetra. |
