New Betta Tail Rot Well, if any of you are wondering how my new betta's doing, he's got Tail Rot! I don't even know how he got it. This stinks. What happen to that beautiful tail I saw when I got him. I've been treating him for 5 days now on triple sulfa. I've also been adding extra stress coat and soaking garlic in his tank. On the plus side, he loves his new hamster tubes!

If the fin rot doesn't go away soon I would check for parasites. Sometimes when they have them they have all kinds of bacterial/fungual diseases, it's b/c the parasites are weakening their immune systems.

| I'd try Rid fungus.......Also do you have his filter intake covered with anything? I know they can get their tails caught if the intake is too strong......
Is that Hamster tube floating? I love it! lol |

You may want to try using Vita-Chem.

They often do have both kinds of fin rot at the same time, so I would add Rid-Fungus daily and do at least 2 courses of triple sulfa. Fish Protector, Vita-Chem and Garlic Guard are good daily additions also.

What do you mean by two courses? And also, my local petshop has run out of triple sulfa. If I wanted to change medications, should I just put some carbon in to absorb the old medicine? He's not on the side with the filter, he's on the side with the airstone.

| The directions tell you how to do one course, you can do that up to 3 times with Triple Sulfa if needed.
Fresh carbon would clear meds in a few hours. |

Okay so my LFS didn't have triple sulfa or rid fungus, so I got Maracyn and Fungus Cure. They both treat fungus and tail rot. Which one do you think I should use? I think I might try the Maracyn because the fungus cure says to wait 48 hours between doses, and i don't have much time because i'm leaving for vacation Sat.

I use Maracyn for my betta that has continual tail-rot. I hope you have more luck than I'm having with my one betta.

I'd go with the Maracyn. Did they have Maracyn II as well? That seems to be a popular combo.

I'm going out to get the maracyn 2 today. Why do you have to treat with both of those?

Each treats a type of bacteria, gram-positive or gram-negative so combining them is similiar to using something that treats both, like triple sulfa.

Still no improvement. I'm going to have to have someone come over while i'm on vacation to put the meds in.

I wonder if the medicine was absorbed because when i switched from trple sulfa to the maracyn, I put some carbon in there to absorb the triple sulfa, but I think I wasn't able to get it all out. I think ony a few tiny pieces are left in there. Do you think they could have absorbed the meds?

A small bit may have been absorbed but a few pieces shouldn't be too big of a factor.

Well after having someone repeat the treatment while I was away on vacation, I have come home to find this and the fin rot is still there. Any ideas what caused these bubbles?

I was also wondering if I should switch meds because the maracyn said to only repeat the treatment once.

The bubbles could be bubble nesting and I'd switch to Triple Sulfa with Rid-Fungus for treating the rot.
