Flaring gills

Is it normal for a male betta to flare it gills? I just saw my betta do it today and it worried me.

Yes it is, I don't have a male, but they'll flare when they're trying to show off their big bad selves or something is bothering them.
Excessive flaring isn't good for them.

I have a female who'll flare at the tv if she doesn't like the sound.

Thanks Lucy. I don't know why he was doing it though. There are no other bettas around and nothing seems to be bothering him.

Sometimes they catch they're reflection in the glass and think it's another betta, silly things!

Lucy is probably right, they like to flare at their own reflection a lot lol, I've also noticed they do it when you're close to the tank and they think food is on the way. Either way its nothing to worry about unless you have a mirror where it is constantly flaring at itself and stressing out.
