decorating question

It's almost time for me to go back to school, and with that it means transporting my tanks. Now Last year, i had a divided ten gallon, but i found that my betta's continuously were getting fin rot. Months ago i removed the divider, and put kryztoff in my community tank. He's doing wonderful in there! his fins have totally grown back, he has a floating ornament that is his hide out, and he doesn't nip, and doesn't get nipped. This means i will only be bringing Claude, and my hermit crabs back to school. Claude is kind of sitting in a bare looking tank at the moment and needs some decorations. I guess my question is, do you have any recommended decorations for bettas or any ideas as to decorate . I need a relatively easy-to-care-for tank. I have tried planted tanks at school but it ends up being too much work, and the transporting causes the plants to drop their leaves and in general don't do well. I really would like to have a sunken ship or a themed tank of some sort. I have tried to replicate a natural looking tank, but until i have the time and money to devote to a planted tank, i kind of want something fun. Are sunken ships safe for bettas? i am concerned about fin ripping. I really don't want hamster tubing in there either, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bettas arent fast swimmers who run into decorations like some other fish so the sunken ship should be ok, you could also go with some driftwood or fabric plants until you get live ones again, either way you go your betta should be ok =)

Personally, I would avoid sunken ships or anything that has sharp edges on it that could tear the betta's fins. That is a huge cause of fin rot, and it sounds like you are pretty sick of treating it, lol. I would go with some marbles or river rocks for the substrate. They are smooth and won't tear the betta's fins. As far as decor, you can play around with a lot of stuff. Some bettas really like to hang out in those little plastic hamster tubes. Mine really like to hang out in caves or rest on tall plants. Some tall silk plants would be pretty natural looking if you combined them with the river rock. Some people on the forum have even used martini glasses or glass bowls as part of their decor. Just make sure that you don't use anything that has glaze on it because it can seep into the aquarium water.

Flexible bubble wands, hamster tubing, silk plants, rubber seaweed, hamster igloos and caves or cave-like (lots of big holes) decor all go over well with our Bettas.
