| Hi gbatch1 Welcome to Fish Lore
Bettas normally don't play well with others and most like being by themselves.
Some of our members have had luck with ottos and corys, I'm sure they'll be here soon and let you know their experience.
Getting a betta is never a bad idea IMO. lol They have such wonderful personalities, and will charm the pants off you. |

| Neons will not go with this betta as they will eat his fins and either kill him or have him very sick and you cannot have more bettas either female or male in the tank together. I am so sorry but it is always one betta to a tank. They will fight each other and kill each other. The list of fish that go with Bettas is not long but here it is:
Corydoras Catfish... there are hundreds of kinds of these and they range in size from 2 to 3 inches each when full grown so you would have room for 3 of these with a betta in a 10 gallon tank. they like to be kept with at least one more of their kind so try not to just buy one if this is your choice.
Otocinclus Catfish... they like to be kept in groups and do not get so big as the Corydoras fish above so you could probably have 2 Corydoras and 2 Otocinclus in the tank with the Betta. They are nocturnal and you probably will not see a lot of them but they do help keep the algae down in the tank
Small Pleco like a Clown Pleco or a Bristlenose Pleco (not a common Pleco or a bigger one as most plecos grown to over a foot long and would outgrow your tank)
CARDINAL tetras... they are the ONLY tetras that I know that are able to live with bettas and neither of them be in trouble.
(neons, bleeding heart, silvertip, black widow, buenos aires, glowlight, beacon fish, rummy-nose, yellow, pretty, flame, black neon, belgian flag, lemon, rosy, serpae, black phantom, red phantom, emperor, cardinal, X-ray fish are NOT acceptable tank mates for bettas)
Other fish that cannot be kept with Bettas are:
Mollies
Platies
Swordfish
Angels
Sharks
Barbs
Cichlids
Danios
Rasboras
Gouramis
Perch
Combtails
Ctenopoma
Paradisefish
Guppies
Shrimp (not technically fish but they are usually eaten by bettas)

If it were me, I would keep the Betta and add a couple of cory cats. They are very social, plus they are active when the lights are on. Panda Cories for example only get to be 1.8" to 2" long. So you could put in three Panda's (maybe 4) with your Betta.
Good luck |

| I have a DIVIDED 10 GAL. tank with 2 male bettas. That may be a good option for you. Buy a divider at Petsmart & then go on from there. I have a pleco in my 10 gal. with my betta & they are best friends. I also have a snail in there. |

| He is from England so he doesn't have a PetSmart to go to. But if he wants a divider I think probably somewhere would have a divider for him but the best bet is still the one with the betta and some cories or otos. Those are never a disappointment. I have used that combination for years and been happy and so are the fish.

| Welcome to Fishlore!
Chickadee's pretty much right on. I've never seen the neons go after a betta (because my bettas' only tankmates have been otos), but others here say they have, so I wouldn't risk it. |

| Welcome to Fishlore.
Bettas are solitary fish and like to have their territory to themselves. They prefer to interact with people and surprise people with the emotions and intelligence they can show. |

| Ryans girlfriend here.
Our Betta ate my Tetras.. Like full on had half the tetra in his mouth with the tail sticking out flapping.. Now I think my Betta is the devil, he is very nasty. So it could just be my betta. But my experience with tetra's makes me say no to them in the same tank.. but I still love my betta and he is in a 10gal divided tank with the newest betta! and for all you out there wondering Mr Betta and Mr Betta 2 still dont have names! lol |

| gbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UK buddy here!!
first question i have is WHY do you want fish I don't mean to be rude with that it helps when you pick fish as i have learnt over the last few years.
If you want to interact with your fish keep the betta and add oto's or cories. If not then start from scratch!!
Bettas are a hoot and WORTH spending time on, i didn't believe it when i read it here BUT SOOOOOOOO true!! They are pets!!! Like a dog or cat they come to the front of the tank to great you, eat from your hand and sulk if you P them off.
If you don't want to keep him then MAYBE i can rehome him but i say give him time. I have A guppy tank and a mixed tank but it is the bettas that make it a joy BY A MILE!!!!! |
