| He Has Arrived! Well, finally, my new betta has arrived! Aparently he got here at 9 in the morning, at which time I was chatting to my mates at school
I have a bad feeling he was kept in an unfiltered tank, he does not appear to have very good swimming muscles (He gets dragged by the current a bit) and appears to have fin rot! I'm not sure about fin rot, but he has white tips on his fins... But only on some Crowntail 'prongs'.
No pics yet! He's a grey/blue body with yellow fins and a bit of blue on the fins. Lovely colours all around! |

I can't wait to see pictures of the little man....He sounds pretty! | I'm going to see how his fins are in the morning and do a water change. If he is looking bad fin wise I'll resort to the 2 50% water change a day schedule I used for Malachai when he had the ammonia disaster. I can keep it up easily! I can't get any of those magic meds in the UK, so I'll have ot find some other thing. That Fishtamin stuff sounds decent according to Michelle, I'll try get some...
If this turns out to be fin rot I will be contacting the seller! He should not ship ill fish. He isn't very active at the moment...
I can't take pics yet - his lights are off until tomorrow to reduce stress. |

Anyone have any naming ideas? |

| Status update: He's been hanging around the top of the filter - the place with least current in the whole tank! Poor thing. I have a feeling he won't like bubbles!
I think I might call him Navajo... I don't know. He has such a cute face! |

| Navajo would be a cool name! Can you turn the filter flow down or block it for him to start out and then gradually increase it as he develops his muscles? Maybe give him a cave so he has another place to get out of the current? |

I have the heater in front of the filter outlet, I might put a bit of a baffle there. I have a coconut cave spare actually... I'll take it out when I get my foreground. (I can't have a coconut cave getting in the way of my precious green things - it would spoil the scape!!! Yes, I know, Aquascapers are crazy... ) |

| Actually Hatchet your description of his coloring is more what we call a Mustard Gas coloring with a dark type body and yellow type fins. Is that right?
If the tips of his rays are the only thing affected with the white areas then he has indeed had or is having fin rot or a fungal infection of some type. He will need the vitamins you mentioned "Fishtamin" I think you called it. I think it compares quite nicely to our VitaChem that we speak of in the miracle 3. Garlic you can get and you need the juice off of it actually or if the type you get does not have juice, you can get some and put it in dechlorinated water after you chop it up in little pieces and let it soak overnight in the fridge. (this has to be kept in the fridge or it will mold eventually) and take a dropper and put about one drop per gallon in his water every day. It will build up his immune system and not smell THAT bad so don't think you will have a garlicky smelling tank. Unless your tank is not cycled 50% twice a day is going to stress him horribly since he is not very strong. I think I would only do one change a day. Also I know you want him to build up his muscles but he will get sore if the filter is left at regular and then he is not going to want to swim about as it will make him hurt. So turn down the filter a little and let him get used to it gradually but let it run enough to keep the tank filtered of course. He is going to be a little fragile at first since that nasty person did not have any intention of taking care of him evidently but I know you are a gentle person and can see him through this.
If you need some help or want a question answered, we are here for you. After all we have waited with you for a long time for Navajo to get here. I think it is lovely that you named him after an American Indian Tribe. It is an honorable and noble nation of people and they were and continue to be a fascinating group to study. I have an adopted nephew who is part Navajo and is a lovely person. I am sure he would think this was a great tribute to his tribe. (he loves fish too)

Yes Sera 'Fishtamin' it's great stuff. Also you can order 'Garlic Guard' from Seapets, i've just ordered some more from them. £9 something with p&p. http://www.seapets.co.uk/product-det...egory/916.html
My UK miracle 3 are : Guarlic Guard, Fishtamin and Stresscoat. I can recommend places to find them all if you need help.
Tell Navajo hi from his Auntie Michelle, can't wait to see him!!!!!!! Last edited by Tazmiche; July 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 PM.

| Well, I use Stress coat as my water conditioner anyway! I have a HUGE bottle of it with me. One of my LFS (I don't get there very often...) carries Sera products and should carry Fishtamin. I think I'll try getting some home made garlic then as well... (An excuse to get another bed in the garden!)
Rose, the filter doesn't actually turn down, but I can baffle it a bit. His swimming is looking a lot better today! I'll do 1 50% a day then. Coconut cave is going in! If he's scared of the siphon he can hide in there. I got the strain of here: http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_colors.htm at the bottom of Bi-colours there is a Spade tail equivalent of him.
None of his tail has 'dropped' yet, and it looks like he just got fin rott. I do have a med in the cupboard called 'eSHa 2000' that claims to take care of fungal and finrott diseases. |
