Betta Behaviour

Yes I could go and look this up and I have but I was wondering if you guys had any input. A few days ago I moved my betta (coolie) into his new tank and he is enjoying it immensely. I am however a beginner fish keeper and especially to betta's so I was wondering why he seems to constantly "hide" on the plants in his tank. Sometimes it takes me a few minuets to even find him until he comes out to give me the evil eye. (he hasn't forgiven me for the fish net yet) One of his favorite spots is to lay on the gravel under one of the leaves. I just kinda curious if this is normal or if maybe something in the tank (filter maybe) is bothering him?

Is your tank a 2.5 minibow with an internal filter? Mine is, and Dusty (my betta) isn't used to the flow of water yet (he spent most of his life in a still-water cup). Dusty will hide in the plants or behind the filter, but give him some time and he'll be happy and outgoing, not to mention building up his swimming strength. The same goes for you, give Coolie a while to adjust, and he should be one of the best fish you've ever kept.

Is your tank cycled?

As someone already mentioned, your betta friend may just be shy because he is adjusting to his new home. Moving is stressful for all creatures... even fish.
However, in my experience bettas are generally very brave and curious little critters, and the prospect of exploring a new environment is generally pursued with relish. The first thing I would suspect is an uncycled tank or an illness in the fish.
Test your water parameters and inspect your betta for any signs of illness (discoloured markings, pale colour or a brown or green hue that was not present before, bumps, frayed fins, etc.). Also be sure that the temperature is somewhere between 78 and 83 degrees F (they like it best at about 80). Photos would be helpful to those of us replying here if you see anything out of the ordinary.
One thing I always provide in a new tank is a small coloured cup or bowl, turned on its side and lined in the bottom with smooth flat rocks, where my new fish can go and hide and feel secure. Don't use clear glass, and face the opening away from the water current so that it is still and serene inside. I usually try to place some plants near the opening to "veil" it and contribute added feeling of security and privacy.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, Dusty however is acclimating quite nicely. He already knows who I am. Good luck with Coolie. It should take him a day or 2

Some Bettas can be more timid at first. I find that just talking to them a bit without any sudden movements can help teach them that they're safe with us.

I have a betta with a very large tail. I have a 5 gallon hex tank with the filter in the hood. Blue hates the flow from the filter and He has such a heavy tail he has trouble swimming good. It drags him down like swimming with all your clothes on would. He has figured out that there is no current in his cave and has taken to laying in there looking out so he can see what is going on...he seems happy there so all is ok .

Yea, the taller 5g hex tank does make it a little harder on them with filtration. That's the nice thing about the long tanks. Teddy Bear has the heaviest fins and spends his time mostly on the side of the tank away from the filter.

I'm really glad I switched from the 5g hex, it's so nice to watch my betta get a long swim in.
