Bettas should be kept around 78-80F so in most cases, yes, bettas do need heaters. Depending on location and/or room temp its possible to get around them but the key is to keep the temperature constant so its still a good idea to have one incase it starts dropping.

Yes, all aquariums should have a heater. It helps maintain and stabilize the water temp.

yes they do. the only reason i wouldn't reccomend it is if you keep yours in a 2g (8 litre) or smaller, the temperature will fluctuate a lot and your betta will de fried.

As everyone already said... yes!
People here seem to keep their bettas anywhere from 77-83F, I would not suggest going above 80 unless they are ill. 79 seems perfect to me, if you can get a heater good enough to do that. The Stealth heaters seem to be very popular here (I love mine, it's the best of the 4 different types I own) and they are capable of maintaining very stable temp. Depending on where you get it, they can be pretty affordable; I think I paid $31US for mine.

I use the stealth also. I get them at petsmart, armed with a print out of their page from online, they'll honor the price.
I recently bought a 50W, the difference between online and the store was $14.00.

The best heaters (the only kinds I've found that worked...) are Visitherm Stealth and Hydor Theo. You'll pay more for them than other brands, but they'll keep the temp constant.

Keep your betta at 78-82. If you keep them at "room temp" they're lethargic and unhappy.

Sorry if this is stuff you already know... the general rule for heating is 5 watts per gallon (so a 5 gal tank would have a 25 watt heater...don't worry about what it says on the heater box). Also bettas should be kept (for a long list of reasons...) in at least a 5 gal tank (though some people keep small females in 3 gal tanks). If you have a betta in a bowl or a tank less than 2.5 gals, please do not attempt to heat it as this is unsafe...it's too easy to overheat (but do go get your betta a larger tank with a heater).
