Say hello to Leonard!

Hey everybody – meet Leonard! Until 5 hours ago, he was living in a cup at Petco. I spotted him a week ago and didn’t have a place for him but as of this afternoon, he’s taken up residence in a bookshelf tank on my kitchen counter. I fell in love with his black mask and thought about him all week. Since this tank was still in the box (gasp!!!), I turned it into a nice new betta home. After picking up my beautiful boy, I managed to drive off home (8 miles away) leaving my wallet on the roof of the car. The wonderful man who found it on the highway and called the sheriff (who, in turn, called me) is named Leonard so my new finbaby is called Leonard in honor of one of the good Samaritans left in the world!

Wow, congrats on him! It's so hard to leave them behind in a torture cup and then be preoccupied with them afterward. I imagine you were so glad to have him safe and sound with you, it would be easy to forget your wallet!
I saw a cup baby yesterday that I left behind at PetCo... slept terribly all night and had dreams about the betta in a 10 gallon tank, and how he would look when he filled out... thought of that never happening... first thing I thought of this morning was him... so I just got back 20 minutes ago from picking him up. :/

He's a handsome boy, I'm so glad that he's in a nice comfy home with you.

It's Ryan here I’m at work she's at home in bed, I’ll have to tell her to respond to this thread. She has been saying that she wants to name them so that i don't refer to them as Mr.Betta and new Mr.Betta we also have Misses.Betta .... We will see she might have to ask for help in naming them

Ya know, Minx, I hadn't thought that karma might be involved in my wallet being returned!

Devon, that's exactly what happened. I was preoccupied trying to get the car cooled off before I put Leonard in (it was VERY hot and muggy here yesterday) that I completely forgot the wallet. Of course, the minute I got home and reached for the wallet, I immediately remembered NOT grabbing it off the roof! All's well that ends well, I say!

I'm looking forward to seeing his colors in a few days, as well! Right now I'm concentrating on getting him to eat, the little brat! Not in a panic yet because he's acting fine. And when I put a pellet in (soaked in garlic guard), it got blown around by the filter and Leonard chased it down but didn't eat it. Just looked at it and then looked at me like "well I THOUGHT it was food but it's NOT!" Maybe he's not used to pellets?

I had to block the filter outflow because it looked like Leonard was having problems with the current and all that finnage! Is this a common problem with the filtration on these bookshelf tanks?

I told my husband about our newest boy on the phone last night...hubby is on the 3rd day of a solo motorcycle trip to Wyoming (we live in central NY). There was silence on the phone....then: "we have a NEW betta?" I think he's afraid he'll come home to wall to wall fishies! Like that's a bad thing!

Kelly, I use a bulky piece of decor in my tank to break the current (I also have a more powerful filter than the bookshelf comes with). Planting with some stocky foliage on both ends will provide him with places to get away from the current... sometimes they love to play in it, but other times they want to get away and relax, so it's good to have both available.

Here's a photo of my setup, if it helps:

There are also some large plants on the left end that you can't really see in the photo (I've added a couple of things since this picture.) Something like this will give your new boy the best of both worlds.

My boyfriend complains about all the fish, too... says some day he won't be able to see me any more through the walls of aquariums... .... if only I could afford that many!

if I get rid of the piano....how many tanks could I fit in that space?

or wait a minute....oooooh a bunch of those bookshelf tanks would fit on TOP of the piano, I think. Where's my tape measure?
