10g dual filtration

I have to go back to one tank for my girls since its just Faye and Misa now. Having the filter on one side and an airstone on the otherside seemed to work but I'm not so keen on the idea anymore. I'd perfer to have a filter for both sides. I know the filters I have now would be too powerful, plus the hood wont exactly allow a second filter and I wouldrather not have to start cutting into it.

I was thinking I could just throw a sponge filter on the other side and see how it works. If it does the job go ahead and get one for the other since I'm assuming it would be easier current wise - I just can't find any locally and its not really worth the $10 shipping when the sponge filters themselves will only come to about $6 for the two. Of course I could always order some Vita-Chem since I can't find it locally but I'm still not sure if sponge filters are the way to go.

I was then thinking that perhaps pick up two of the 10i intank filters from Whisper. My boy Vash doesn't seem to have a problem with the one in his 5g one bit. Online Petsmart has them for $10.99 and if they have them at the store, its the same price as DFS so there isn't any shipping to worry about.

So between the two - would it be better to just call the store and see if they have the intank filters in the first place for about $25 or just order the sponge filters along with the vita-chem for $23? I know it comes down to which filtration will be better for the girls but I can't help but throw in the extras to help justify the shipping cost.

this is the little hang in the tank filter we put in our divided tanks.

it seems to be doing well, and it has an adjustment for the current.

we bought them at the petco store and not online, so no shipping.

good luck!!

Hm, I'll have to look into that, looks promising. Saddly the closest Petco is a 2hour round trip - to get out there I have to talk my mother into going to the PA Dutch store on the weekends ^^;

Well what's your reason for wanting another filter? If you just want lots of biological filtration without having to use a filter that causes tidal waves in small tanks, then sponge filters are the way to go. If you just want a filter to suck up the junk on the other side of the tank, then a sponge filter is pretty much useless.

I don't think there is really much junk to suck up - I'm in the tank just about every other day tiding up after the plants. The filters don't seem to be too much for my girls but its way too much for the italian val - its doing great on the opposite side but on the side with the filter it's just being torn up. Thanks for summing that up for me ^^
