Let me introduce my new Betta.

Yesterday I was visiting a local Petco. The Bettas I saw there were in absolutely terrible conditions: 2 of them were dead (nobody even cared to take them away), 7-10 had fin rot, a few more looked half-dead. All of them are kept in dirty water, their cups are only half full, some of the cups are put on top of each other, poor fish don't even have a chance to get air. I always get really emotional at this store. I noticed a very tiny girl there. I have never seen a betta as small as this one. She was stressed (no color), did not look happy. I just couldn't let her stay in that terrible store a minute longer. She is in a 1 Gal bowl right now. She is so small that you can barely see her in the bowl. I got a 3 Gal Eclipse for her but I am afraid she will get lost there!
I talk with the Petco manager about the way they treat their fish. I think it was useless. She tried to read me a lecture about Bettas being happy in small puddles. She said that they change water every other day, feed Bettas all kind of food (different pellets, bloodworms, etc.). I don't believe her. She also said that I was the only person (!!!) who complained about her fish. She is not going to change anything in the store. My comments and suggestions didn't do a thing. It is so, so sad...
But at least I got a new fish!

Some people are evil... I hate them!

She will grow - I'd let her roam in the 3gal. Such a cutie!

Good for you! The world needs more people like you to speak up for the animals in the world. And I have never seen a betta so tiny before!

Sometimes I think that PetCo's betta business thrives on how bad they treat their fish and how bad people will feel when they see them. I just can't go in that store any more. Sometimes I battle with myself because it's 1) rescue the betta and let PetCo make a profit off the way they treated it to begin with, or 2) not give my money to the monsters, and not be able to sleep at night thinking of the betta still in the cup at the store, languishing in terrible conditions.

Congratulations on your girl! At least one of them escaped their fate.

That sound Petco sounds horrid.

Do you have a heater and filter for your 3g?
She'd do better with a warm consistent temperature.
Have you added anything to the water besides dechlorinator to help her?

She's such a sweet girl, nice save.

Ara, she is an adorable little mite. I agree that she will be happy ( and not believe her good luck) in a 3g eclipse as soon as possible, with a heater and filter she should thrive. The addition of VitaChem vitamins and Fish Protector, (as well as dechlorinator) would give her an additional boost.

Don't forget nitrogen cycle if you aren't changing the water every day or so..........she will be a happy and healthy girl.

Great save, keep us posted. What is her name??

Aww she's adorable! SO cute and pink and tiny!

I also have to agree with the 3 gallon thing. I think she'll think it's her own private penthouse! hehe

Did you name her yet?

Hi Ara,
Your new little girl is darling!!! I am so glad that you rescued her. Let us know when you find a name for her. I would put her into the 3 gallon eclipse tank with a couple of nice plants for her to rest on and maybe a cave for her to hide in
