| Sorry but I will not be here today I wanted you to know that I am not ignoring anyone here today and I am concerned about the problems here but I have had major problems here with my tanks. Our water supply is contaminated here and I missed the announcement on the television and went ahead and changed the water in all but 2 of my tanks yesterday.
To put it bluntly, I lost half of my Dwarf Loaches and some of my Yo-Yo Loaches and the bettas suffered but did not die. I am having to watch them all very closely today as they are not in good shape but I do not know what all was the contaminating substances so it is hard to know how to treat them. All I know is the town lost half its water supply when a pipe in a large water tower broke and drained it and allowed the whole system to come into contact with substances that are considered so dangerous to humans that all restaurants and drive-ins and all homes are being told not to use water until further notice without boiling for 30 minutes for washing and drinking not at all. (I still wouldn't know what killed them but my friend called me this morning and asked me if I had heard the news as she couldn't get coffee on her way to work at the drive thru) So I am doing damage control big time.

| No they have not told any of us exactly what is in the water and today we went from "possibly Monday" to " until further notice" for sure. There are so many different things going about that it is hard to know what to believe and no one in official capacities is really saying anything. They told us to boil water to wash with and Mom has a supply in her basement of jugs of water she put down there in March to use for drinking. I was not so smart. I thought well, I can always buy some. Now there are 12,000+ people in town all going after the supplies at the stores and I have been told that there will be no more water for the fish until the new supply comes in as "people come first." So they will have to do with the water change they got already until the new supply gets here later.
We do have water, plenty of it now just not any for drinking or personal use. (and definitely not for fish use) None of the restaurants in town can use any so most of them are closing for the duration and that puts a strain on the economy even further as we just had massive layoffs at a factory here last week.
I have so far lost 8 Dwarf Loaches, 1 Yo-Yo Loach and the other 2 are probably not going to make it, My Clown Loach. I do not know how but the bettas are seeming to be better. I did not do as large a water change on their tanks but the 25 gallon got a 50% change and that was that. That is where all the deaths have been so far but the surprise to me is the 2 otos and 2 cories that were in that tank don't seem affected by the stuff at all. Usually they are the first to have problems.
I am simply getting through this by consuming nothing in the liquid line but juice, soda, and bottled water. I do promise not to consume any of the stuff until I am quite certain that the stuff is safe. Our State Health department is not known to be overly quick to do things like this so we do take this seriously.

| I hope the people there call for an explanation to the officials responsible for emergency planning after things get back to normal. Either they don't have a plan for the loss of the town's drinking water supply or the plan they have stinks.
We're sorry that you lost those fish and know you're taking the best care of them that they could have. |

| Thank you so much for taking the time to post the update, Rose. The news reports for Beatrice, NE, seem so sketchy. I went online yesterday to find the exact chemicals involved and more about the water line break, and came up with almost nothing. I hope you and your surviving babies continue to be okay. Your momma sounds like a smart lady with unusual intuition. How could she have anticipated such a disaster?
You and your fishie babies are still very much in my thoughts. Last edited by pamd; June 30th, 2008 at 01:22 AM.
