| Very upset!!!!!!!!!! Casper appeared bloated a BIT yesterday was acting fine all day. He was gone this morning.
I am not ordering any betta off aquabid or getting any new ones for a long time. I need to figure out what is going on with my small tanks.
I had a lot of plans for betta. But now that is totally cut short.
RIP my sweetest betta ever Casper. You had a short 5 months and I am sorry if I did anything to take the rest from you. |

| Yeah I am pretty poed/broken hearted. Something certainly isn't right. They have all had symptoms of the irrovirus...they disease which is getting gouramis, and other Labyrinth fish.
No one else seems bloated or anything. I am walking on egg shells waiting to see who is next. |

| So sorry Allie.................For all the joy, this hobby can be very frustrating at times. We know how you feel though, after losing half our cichlid (8) population over two dreadful days this week. Hang in there. |

I am so paranoid. I am getting the bleach out and cleaning everyone's section today. |

: | I would think as long as it is kept dry it would keep...BUT any dampness at all might breed some kind if mold or bacteria that we cant see. Also I just thought ...additives can deteriorate so I wonder there to...If you have vitamins they have a best before date as they may not be stable after that ...could it be the same...just for the sake of it ...food is not that expensive. I would toss it all and start over with fresh stuff and see if that helps. |

YES I think it's connected, but only attacking the weakest fish. Betta Keepers Read Please Quote:

| Allie as I am sure you have already thought of this ..but just in case... I would be very carefull with nets and anything that you are using in the tanks to prevent cross contamination...including your hands. Wash between tanks and such...good luck with the cleaning..I posted in the section where you put the cleaning post about rinsing with declor...if you havn't thought of that then you may want to give that a bit of a read to..I to have lost 4 dwarf gouramies and suspect the virus but havn't ( knock on wood ) lost one of my 2 bettas to it. |

| Allie,
Words cannot express how sorry I am to hear of Casper's demise. I will only say that I too am having trouble with the one little guy I received from Thailand not long ago through aquabid and he is having some similar symptoms to those the other fish have been having.
I will say that I think that not purchasing through the vendors that are sending from there right now is a totally wise decision.
It breaks my heart that you are going through this and I am so sorry. I would like to offer all my condolences. I am so sorry. I thought he was a very beautiful fish. He will be remembered.

| We have had too many losses lately with all of our bettas. All you can do is go forward. Please try not to look back as hard as that will seem to you right now. There is not anything you could have done to foresee this and if you could your would not have had this happen for the world.
You took fish who needed someone to love them and gave them the best homes they could have had and you need have no regrets. You were and continue to be a wonderful betta mother as do the rest of the betta parents here. The homes provided for these fish were wonderful and so much better than they could have had. You all did the best you could and those fish loved you.
Now you just do what you need to do to pick up and carry on and if you do not feel you can provide homes for more bettas yet that is okay, but you do need to do what needs to be done for the other betta children you have to care for and that will hopefully help you to carry on with the day to day things.
We can love the little ones who have gone but they would not want us to grieve to the point of not carrying on. But we will keep them in our hearts forever.
I do believe that there is a place that they go to be able to frolic and play in a way they never could here.

On a brighter note...the remaining 5 are acting fine. No one is bloated or anything. |

I use this disinfectant spray that is for in between working with animals of all kinds. It's from our LFS. I am going to let the tank cycle a bit before putting the betta boys back in there. I am removing them from the divided 33g just in case. Less chance of issues when the fish are in their own quarters. |

| Yes, you are very wise. It is not a good idea to use divided tanks until you know what is going on. But you are doing all you can to take care of it so realize you are trying.

| Dear Allie,
I hope some of the tears I cry tonight after seeing the losses of Buster, Holly, Aries, and Casper will substitute for a few of your own and save you a couple of tears. Let me cry just four for you, one for each baby. I'm so sorry, Allie. I know Casper, especially, is one of the loves of your life. Even though I didn't know him "in person," I loved him, too, and am so shocked and saddened by his sudden death.
Besides the possible contamination of the food, and possible cross-contamination of a disease, another thing that occurred to me is that there might be something in your water that you cannot detect no matter how good your aquarium testing is, no matter how good you are as a betta mom, and no matter how good your aquarium water treatment is. Some chemicals and/or heavy metals might come to mind, which you cannot detect and for which you have no control. I see you said you are buying spring water, but don't know if that's what you have been doing all along or if this is a new thing.
I will cry more tears for your babies, Allie. We all know you are racking your brains out thinking of the possibilities and what went wrong. It might be a while until you try again, but you'll succeed, girl, you will succeed! |

| Hi Allie
I am so sorry about Casper. Its unbelievable. I know that you are a great fish mom and do everything you are supposed to do with your fish. Its so sad to loose our favorite fish when we have no idea what happened and what we can do to prevent it again. It sounds like you are about to take all the right precautions and I wish you the best of luck with your others. 's ~ kate |

Yup we've thought of that already. Especially this time of year, the heat and temp fluctuation...the extra chemicals the water plant puts in the water to treat it for bacteria. Nope it's a new thing as boiling the water we have now, treating it and letting it sit. Betta are sensitive fish so this makes sense. BUT it only as effected the ones in the 12gs and 5gs (which are disinfected to death & cycling for awhile) The boys seem fine in the 33g for now...no one is bloated or lethargic. They aren't being fed until tomorrow when I can get some new food. Quote:

Stuff like this happens, it's part of life & death. Some of us aren't meant to be on this earth for long. Especially when you are man made fish with fancy fins.
