Aged water

I have always thought that if I use a good water conditioner I have no need to age water. But on other website I found that a water conditioner does not solve the issue of nitrogen gases that cause gas bubble disease. What is that? Is it true? Do I need to keep tap water in a separate bowl for a few days before adding it into a fish tank?

no, but you may have to let it sit for it to get to room temperature if you dont have a heater

Hi there. I suggest you read this link and it should help you.
http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

If it blows your mind as it did me during my first tank set up ask as many questions as you like, none are too small. Water conditioner isn't going to cycle the water, it it removes the harmful susbstances from tap water.

Yes, I know about nitrogen cycle. I mean the water I use for weekly (or sometimes daily) water changes. Do I need to age it? I always take regular tap water (78F), treat it with a water conditioner and add the water directly to my tanks. I have never heard about nitrogen gases. Are they so deadly?

Oh well ara you have me there!! I have 2 glass bottles for beer/wine/booze making, not sure how many gallons each, that i will fill and leave to raise to room temp BUT when they are empty i just condition water with some warm water and then top up with cold and fill tanks! I have over 200 ltrs to change here. I've never heard about the gases stuff!! So long as the tanks are cycled i believed it was just conditioned water! In my 2 years on here i'm sure i would have read something. Unless it's a new theory?!?! I mean it used to be OK way back to cycle WITH fish but not now we realize it's cruel! Post a link or type facts it states. Mike will help you for sure but i do the same as you.

Sorry i miss understood the post!

This is the link to the post where people talk about using only aged water for their fish: http://www.ultimatebettas.com/index.php?showtopic=25585.

ive heard of it, but ive heard its from adding COLD water to a tank..if you use the same temp water as the tank, with water conditioner, thats fine...but as everyone here, and on other sites, we each have our own opinion...id be curious as to what some of the others have to say also

I've not heard of this before. We've never 'aged' water for our tanks.

I have never heard of this either. I have had aquariums on and off ..( mostly on ) for over 40 yrs. ( since I was 6 or 7 ) I have learned a lot of things by trial and error as well as reading a lot over the years but have never heard of this. I have bubbles in a tank when it is freshly filled but they wipe right off. I have a python for water changes but I don't like to add water directly to my tank even if I add the declor 1st so I have a 10 gallon bucket and I put the water of the correct temp in there and use a 1/2 gallon jug to take it out and treat it in before I add it to the tank. I always add the declor and stir it in before I pour it out of the jug into the tank. I rarely even get bubbles on the tank sides that way . Personally I wouldn't worry about it as I have never had any probs doing it the way I do ... But what ever a person does is up to them and I would never try to change their opinion, but this works for me....good luck with what ever you decide.

I remember coming across this type of information(about the aged water) when I first started doing some research on bettas so when I first got my boy, I had always let my water sit for 24 hours. It might not be necessary but I'm use to doing things this way now.

I run the water out of the tap the same temp (just a touch warmer) as the tanks with the NovAqua+ in the gallon jugs and go into the tanks and drain the water and by the time I have them drained and cleaned the water is the right temperature (not more than a little while) and I have not had a problem with my water unless I happen to have a nitrate problem because of the farming around here and then I buy gallons of Spring Water and heat a bit of it in the microwave and pour it back into the jug to warm it a bit to the temp of the tank and use it directly. I used to put the water out overnight and let it sit but found that it got colder this way and now just do it the way I described and the bettas and other fish do not complain any.

Just to be on the safe side when I first did this I tested for chlorine in the jugs and it was 0 so I know that it does instantly remove the chlorine and so I feel safe doing this.
