| Betta imbellis I was considering purchasing a breeding pair from aquabid, and was wondering if anyone has any info about them. I read that they are the most peaceful, so i was considering putting them in my 55g. Heres a pic. DO you think this is a good choice or no? http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...tas&1212468741 |

| Yah, if you have a large enough tank they are more peaceful than "tame" bettas. |

| I want some someday too. But first I want to master keeping splendens before spending money on wild fish I could very well kill.
These are the ones which can be kept together male and females right? Splendens are the only ones who are used as fighters, the Pla Kats I think. |

| from what i read it says that males and females can be kept in community tanks, which is why it shouldn't be expensive to breed. But i am not necessarily intending to breed them. If it happens great, but i dont think it will unless i separate them. Also they dont have nearly as many babies as splendens (200 fry, as opposed to 500), and it says that they are quite hardy. i also really love the idea, of bettas in community tanks. You have no idea how much i wish my bettas could go in my community tank! Last edited by rileyrk190; June 1st, 2008 at 09:37 PM.

I love them all. |

| I guess i am sick of buying bettas from walmart, and having them die after a month. I see them staring at me, saying save me! and i buy them..but I have yet to have a walmart betta last me more than five months. I currently have two bettas, one is a walmart betta, and the other is from a LFS who had amazing bettas. Having them side-by-side you can really tell which is which. I have had a constant battle of fin rot with Kryztoff my walmart betta and he is considerably smaller than claude although he is older. |

| Imbellis are beautiful wilds. Congrats on buying that handsome male. Have you also found a female? I wonder if your Imbellis will come through Denver. |

I am with on buying store bought betta. Casper my AB betta is the only one who hasn't had any issues at all.
The rest are lfs, and Buster my other CT boy is a Walmart buy. Haven't had any sickness with him but he chews his tail when he gets poed. |

| The gorgeous Imbellis is indeed peaceful, for bettas. They do flare and squabble but not seriously. A few ripped fins are to be expected.
Just one warning: they JUMP, so be careful to make sure there are no gaps in the tank top! |

| I only have one gap..but i will definitely get on that. I went ahead with the imbellis purchase. They were offering a pair, one male and female, and they were three months old. Then, they said that they had another order going through new york, so i got a slightly reduced shipping rate, and that they would send another female as a gift. All i had to do was pay the cargo fee. There's always a catch..lol and a fool that will pay the fee (myself). The whole transaction is a bit confusing, so i hope it goes smoothly. |

| Can't wait to see them!
They prefer a densely planted tank to simulate their natural habitat. |

| I have shelf liner (the puffy kind with holes) over the holes in the lid of our wild betta tank, but you can also get divider like material at the crafts store if you'd prefer that. Either can make your tank pretty secure for the wilds. |

| thats a good idea..i will give that a try. the only hole part is where the filter runs into the tank. |

| I don't know if you'd want to, but you could even get a submersible filter, fluval makes some good ones. It would make it easier to cover the hole, but I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra money on. |

| no, its a huge over the side filter for my 55 that came with the tank, so i will just put the liner thing over it. I will quarantine them first separately in my divided tank, and then add one of the females to my community tank to see how it goes. If she appears to be ok, i will add the other female, and then the male last. That should give me plenty of time to fix the hole. Also i will add some floating fake plants which should reduce their space to jump. |

| Maybe a bunch of caves would be helpful.. giving them places to hide when they feel the need and perhaps reducing their jumpiness. That has worked with the Mahachai but not sure how the Imbellis would take to them. |

| So the wild betta are more of jumpers than splendens. It makes sense going from the wild to a tiny tank...geesh I'd jump too. |

| Even if they're tank-bred & raised, they'll still be more liable to jump than the pet-store Splendens. I guess it's like the instinct isn't buried as deeply. |

| I made them some PVC caves last night. My goal was to try to make them look like bamboo..but i am not sure what to seal them with. I have heard epoxy, but that is expensive, and quite difficult to work with. The paints are non toxic, water based paints, but they still need to be sealed. What if i painted aquarium silicon over them? would that be messy, and not look right? |

| Check in the DIY section or maybe post a thread there on it, but I think you can get a clear silicone that's safe for aquarium use at the hardware stores and spend a whole lot less on it. |

| If you're planning to put these Imbellis in with a gourami, be aware that there may be fights over territory. |

| Thanks. I was planning on it eventually. I made lots of caves, and am going to get some tall plants for them all. My gourami, is not very aggressive, but i have another tank that they can go in if i see signs of aggression. |

| If you're going to breed them, they'll definitely need their own tank.. 2 tanks really. I'd move the fry after they're free swimming. |
