Getting baby betta, but our tap water is hard water.. questions

Okay I am going to buy a 5 g tank for the little guy, I am getting from my mother. (this is her first set of surviving fry she has about 20) I told her I wasn't going to take him for free though. I am going to give her a pleco for her angel tank, I have one thats about 2.5 inches long.

Anyways, our tap water is perfect for our cichlids, however I worry about using it for any other fish. I am wondering if I should just go ahead and do just as I did before w/ the guppies and tetras and buy spring water? Or could a betta adjust to our tap water?

We had 7.8 pH in Florida and the Bettas did fine in it.

I have a fish book that gives very specific water parameters for different species, but for betta it says that pH and water hardness is "not significant".

So basicly if I keep the parameters clean the bettas going to be okay w/ the water... thats good news. I don't have to lug spring water!

That's all I do here. I usually leave a bucket of treated water for the betta sitting around. Of course add stress coat/fish protector to keep the betta's scales and fins stronger.
Betta from LFS or fancy ones from Thailand are bred in betta mills *so to speak* These guys are far from wild caught so they can handle more of harder water.

I have "liquid rock", and my newest betta boy, Shy-lo, is the first to have a tank of well water. ( the other 3 tanks are treated water hauled from town, a pain in the butt for sure!)

Once in awhile I add Fish Protector at water change. He is doing Great!

They are tough little guys! Good luck.

My hardness scale is off the scale and and all my little guys seem to do well with it. Just be sure the little guy is acclimated slowly to the water when you get him and he should be okay. They are amazingly resilient and tolerant to most things. Temperature is the one thing they really do not seem to have much tolerance to so please be sure to keep the temperature withing limits for a baby especially. He needs to be kept between 78 to 80 degrees F for optimum health and it is especially important during his baby stage.

I have fish ocd... I will be checking the temp reg. if nothing else in my house gets done, my kids, cat, and fish are clean, fed, and happy. I am prob going to get a stealth for this tank, its going in my bedroom and the room stays a bit cooler than the rest of the house so I want the regulation from the stealth (they seem so much more dependable and consistant when you set them).

The Stealth is the best heater bar none IMO. It is not only very accurate and dependable but also looks very nice in the tank. It is also absolutely unbreakaable as opposed to the glass heaters including the Visi-therm Deluxe which I have had break in my tanks and had to throw out more gravel and decor and plants than I care to mention. The Stealth is the only heater I will ever use in my tanks again. At present I do have a titanium heater in my larger tank but as soon as it goes a Stealth will take its place.

I wish your new babies the best and you as well. It sounds like you have things under control and they will do fine. Just acclimate them slowly and give them a lot of time to get used to their new water before releasing them into the tank. Please do remember to post pics when you can as we do love pictures!!
