I don't know whether to cry or what....

After a solid week of hounding the fish store, they finally got their female betta's in I drove there as soon as I was done class and picked up a beautiful little girl, you could tell she was faded, but the tips of her fins were as red as fire After about an hour of acclimating her, I put her into the 10 gallon I bought last week, and watched her for another hour or so. She was curious, but seemed good. I had to leave for the night, and I came back this morning, and she was gone There's nothing else in the tank with her, there's no openings on the hood, she's not in the filter....I am just so stressed now I even looked around the tank to see if she somehow jumped out, but there was no sign of her. She was supposed to be a surprise for my girlfriend who thought Poe was a cute fish. I'm confused...

HOLY COW ! That is too weird!.... Its got to be somewhere? Bettas are not like a tiny neon that can get 'lost'...
I am so sorry to hear but as confused as you are as to what could have happened to her? She's got to be somewhere!

I know she has to be somewhere, I just don't know where. I just don't understand how I can up and up lose a Betta in a 10 gallon with 2 fake plants

Wow, just gone? I'm so sorry Kona.
That is weird.
Do you have a cat? Any openings small enough that she could jump out or a paw could fit into?

Nope, no pets besides the fish. I'm usually a fairly logical person, and I just can't think of a way it got out

Well Cory... its totally bizarre to not be able to find the Betta. Sadly we know that it has died now, but where it is...is a mystery. Was anyone able to take the Betta out of your tank without your knowledge?

No. I'm at class right now, and I like in the dorms, and the doors are always locked. None of my other fish were gone (didn't expect them to be). I'm just upset that I bought a fish to surprise my girlfriend (she wasn't going to take care of it, but I was going to let her name it and let her call it hers), and now it's nowhere to be seen...

Well Cory,
Like you said.. logically this is not possible. Betta fish or any fish just do not disappear.. its got to be somewhere and you will probably have to dig in your gravel... move everything around.. look again all around the outside of the tank..even farther away from the tank.. it could have jumped farther than you think.. maybe even slid on something to make it go even farther.. but it is somewhere in your room! Good luck with the search...

I'll have to check around when I get home from class....I checked everywhere around the tank, if it would've got out in the front, it would be on my bed, and from the back, it would be on my desk...so it must be inside somewhere...

Wow thats strange.. that happend a couple times in my moms house.. she literally blamed my stepdad and his sleep walking.. she said he was eating the fish! (he has epilepsy, was born w/ it and has severe sleep walking issues he will sleep eat and do weird stuff)
Btw Im not trying to make light of it.. its sad! I would look under furniture and stuff.. My stepdad really has issues.. and he really might have done that...(to their fish) to this day they still occ. miss a couple fish here and there... I'd hate to see what would happen if I bought them a red belly pacu... he'd get woke up in a hurry then.

This is very sad, and also very perplexing.

There are absolutely NO openings in the hood? Someone on this forum had a betta jump out of what seemed an impossibly tiny opening. Someone else (or maybe it was the same incident) had a betta scoot five feet across a table after jumping out of the aquarium and then falling onto the floor. If there is an opening, no matter how small, look all around the bed, the desk, the floor.

Even though most bettas kept as pets are highly domesticated, they still have many characteristics of their wild cousins. They really can "scoot" quite a distance on dry ground. It's a survival mechanism in the wild, so that if their food supply dries up or the water gets bad where they are, they can get to another pond or puddle.

If there is no opening whatsoever, dig around in the substrate, and look again in the filter and intake.

It'll be interesting to see the conclusion of this. I'm sure you're very distraught and so sorry this happened to you.

She isn't stuck in between something? I suppose your tore the tank apart looking for her. I would have.

This is a really sad story. I have a fish I would like to lose, but he isn't stupid enough to jump out of his tank. My kribensis has become very mean, and is actually the reason my cory is now with my betta. The cory didn't have the sense to stay out of its way like the platy do. I'm considering trying to give him to a LFS, if they will take him he really a pretty fish. I probably don't have large enough tank to keep him happy.

I'd take him if you were closer I have no idea where she is though. I've checked the my entire floor (I live in a dorm, I can barely walk :|), I've tore apart the tank twice...argh I'm not one to give up easily, but I just don't know where else it could've gone

This is a very strange situation. Are you sure nobody got inside your room and took your fish? Maybe somebody played a prank on you?

HM I am really perplexed by this. I am so sorry this has happened to you. I wish I could help. If you don't have any other pets then she had to of jumped out through something or got caught in something in the tank. Those are the only 2 things I can think. You don't have any room mates do you that may have a played bad joke on you? or any friends that access to your room?Natalie

This is beyond sad...I have a feeling she may have jumped out......If she did you'll have to look really hard because she could be anywhere in that room.....

I hope you find her..Keep us posted.....

I was the one with the betta who got out the impossibly small hole in the back of the tank hood. She jumped out and I found her the next morning in the back of the tank on the floor all crispy. It was sad but she got out I have no idea how. I am praying for a better outcome for your little girl. Please do let us know how it comes out. It is a sad thing to have a fish die this way when it is not something that can be helped but they can do dumb things and get themselves in trouble and not have a way out.

Please know that I am thinking of you and hoping for the best.

Well, I found her this morning when I went to overhaul the tank. Apparently she must of wiggled out from the filter cut-out, and then got under the aquarium (it's raised a bit). Still really sad, but glad that I "solved" the mystery of the missing fish. Thanks for all your support,

Cory

Cory,

I am so sorry that this has happened. My heart goes out to you. I know how you feel and hope you will not give up and soon you may have another little lady to care for. They never take the place of the first I know but in time the pain of the situation does end and you can enjoy the fish you do still have.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

I'm very sorry too. At least you solved the mystery. Are you heading back to the store while they probably still have some female bettas left, or do you need to wait a while to heal from this unfortunate incident?

I'm so sorry she's gone. We can all learn from her......we must check and make sure there are no gaps our fish can wiggle or jump out of.

I dont know what I'm going to do. I really liked her, and for the brief hour or so I had her I became attached. I think I might wait a while before I try another female. Thanks for your support everyone.

Yeah, I am glad I found the body. I think I may be changing the tank into a dwarf Cichlid tank now (whispers to himself "I hope the Betta board doesn't get me :O"), so it may be awhile until I get a female. Besides, Poe is still kickin'

This just recently happened to me too. I spent hours looking for my betta only to find the poor thing dried up on the floor.
