Blown Fins??

What do they look like? I think my boy might have them, but it could be tail-rot too.

I'll post pics after my class *runs*

Edit: Attached a pic of the end of his tail, and the way the tank was set up before today. I just noticed it this morning, he was fine last night I also removed the large branching plant thingy from his tank, incase it was the attached plants on it that were causing the damage. I've got him in his original container now (he's a WalMart rescue, lol)

I named him Sushi, lol. I added a couple of drops of BettaFix to the container, and changed the filter in the tank, as it was time for that anyways.

Water temp in the tank ranges from 80 to 84, and I use Jungle Start Right with Allantoin, which makes the ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels all safe. I change probably 50% of the water as well. Tank size is 5 gallons.

The reason I'm asking is because I left the dorm room yesterday at 9 am, and didn't get back until 9:30 at night, and it was dark by that time. His light was on all day. I've noticed that if his light is on, and the room's dark, he flared, and goes a bit bonkers, lol.

His tail is in the very beginning stages of fin and tail rot. The filter has nothing to do with it and should not have been removed. In most filters when you remove them you start the cycle all over again and cause the ammonia to build up in the tank again which is much more harmful to the fish than any other problem. Was the tank cycled and what type of filter were you using? Usually if there is not a bio-wheel filter you only remove a portion of the media and replace only about half of the media and use the other half of the old media to reseed the new pad.

He can have some Triple Sulfa to repair the ruffled edges to his fins and some Vitachem and Rid Fungus and Fish Protector to help regenerate the fin tissue that it ragged. It will not harm your cycle and does the best job of helping the fin tissue to regrow. He is not in danger of dying of finrot but the disturbance of the cycle process is a dangerous thing and he will need to have that fixed as soon as possible.

Blowing a fin generally involves a fin being too heavy to be supported by the rays that are the supporting mechanism for the tail. It generally happens in full finned species like the halfmoon or rosetail and they are not capable to holding their tails open to flare with the weight of the fin tissue. The breeders are beginning to breed new types like the feathered bettas who have slightly lighter finnage to prevent this from happening.

It's an activated carbon filter, and I took it out because it was time to. The tank was cycled, yes.

He's my third betta. The other two died 6 months ago due to tank waters taht were too cold Their tanks weren't big enough to get heaters for them.

You can find this:

at Petsmart. It can be cut to fit that filter instead of those expensive cartridges that include carbon.

Yes that is all I use. I never use carbon unless I am removing medication and I keep some loose carbon and media bags that tie with a string for that purpose and have even been known to use a folded up coffee filter for the purpose. (clean new one) You just take a coffee filter and put a couple tablespoons of carbon in it and take a rubber band or piece of string and tie it shut so it cannot get out and rinse it to get it wet before putting it in the filter chamber and you are all set. Those you can throw away, the media bags I usually dump the carbon out of and wash as they get expensive to throw away.

Even this blue pad material can be rinsed in used tank water at water changes and reused until it is ready to fall apart.
