It is not totally fine. You have to be careful or they will jump the divider if they get excited. If they do they can kill each other. How big is your tank? I would get a small piece of plastic (stiff) or cardboard or something that will stay stiff and make a T like top about 4 to 6 inches wide that just lays on top of the divider and makes it impossible for them to jump over it. This will make it at least sure that they will not be on the same side of the tank the next time you see them. They should not really be in the same tank.

Also if the water is a couple inches below the top of the divider, that will help some.

As long as the precautions mentioned above are taken the sight of the female will usually encourage the male to build bubblenests and flare at her. (The flaring is more of a 'strutting his stuff' thing in that situation than anything else. )

my betta tanks are right next to each other and for the longest while I had them blocked off not to see each other. The male also built his nests. So to get them ready for breeding I removed the divider. And what do you know, he stopped biulding nests. Maybe my bettas are weird but my male will not build a nest as long as he sees the female

I read somewhere that even if they cannot see each other they can sense each other's hormones in the water. Which makes them want to see each other, make bubble nest and the females produces eggs constantly. I think this is true b/c Holly is in a divided tank with Jasper and JB. Jasper goes crazy making a bubble nest. Maybe it's why Holly is so fat with eggs all the time.
