If at all possible its best to keep bettas alone. I'm sure you've heard what happens when you put two bettas together and more times than not the same happens when you put a betta in with other fish (bottom dwellers are mostly the exception but that depends on the personality of the betta).

If you want a betta as well as something else in the tank you can look into some cories or otos or even perhaps divide the tank and set it up for two bettas.

Really depends on the Betta. Some are alot more aggressive than others. My old Betta killed one of my Rasboras. They seemed fine for a week and then bam So be very careful.

I really don't advise you to put any brilliantly coloured fish, like neons or male guppies, in with bettas. This can cause a case of mistaken identity and your neons could easily be killed.

Hi!

Um, wouldn't both species attack one another? It's fairly standard around here that for the benefit of both species, you should only keep Bettas with Otos, Corys and Plecos.

wouldn't a school of neons be calm and not nip the betta?

No tetras do not go well with bettas. The only type that I have heard may work and I would really not chance it are the Cardinals. They are fin nippers and the bettas do not recognize them as threats and will allow them to get close enough to do it. They are also fast enough that the betta cannot get away from them if they decide to harass him/her.

It is very true that bettas do well with Otos, Cories (only occasionally and with the choice of the betta), and Plecos. This is mainly because they stay out of the bettas way, do not invade his/her space, and sometimes (as with the Otos and Plecos) are mainly out during the night. BUT this all depends on your betta and you should never introduce these fish AFTER the betta is in the tank. They should be in the tank and settled in to their own territories before Mr./Ms. Betta arrives on the scene. This is true of all territorial fish, Gouramis, Angels, Sharks, or any other aggressive or semi-aggressive fish. They should be the last added.

Please remember that Betta are not community fish and don't get lonely if they don't have any fish buddies. They really are more interested in your attention and will show more personality when they have a tank to themselves.
