Pea Treats Recipe

1 frozen pea

either soak in warm water or nuke it in the microwave for 20 seconds just until defrosted but not cooked. Cool to room temperature. Skin the outer skin off and discard it. Take 1/2 of the inner pea and cut a small piece the size of the bettas eye off of it. Take that TINY piece and make about 3 or 4 small (very small) pieces out of it. (the size of very small pellets) and making sure you have clean hands or a clean plastic spoon feed these little chunks (3 or 4 of them) to your betta on the tip of a clean finger or a clean spoon. Fingers are better and they do not bite or if they nip it is not more than a tiny kitten would do and will not draw blood. Just lay the small piece of pea on your fingertip and slowly put it in the water. When the pea drops off the betta will probably chase it into the water and snatch it into his or her mouth. If you happen to have a little betta who does not want to try their peas, just do not give them any betta foods for a day or so and when they are hungry try it again with a fresh pea. (they dry out very fast) and chances are he/she will love them. I have never had a betta love them if I could get them to try them. It is a special thing that you and your betta can share. It should never be given in place of a meal after this first time, and it can be done no more than one time a day not at mealtime. It is a treat and should not be done within 3 hours of their regular meal. I usually do mine 2-3 times a week at mid afternoon or noon.

I only had one betta in all of mine who would not even try them but the rest have happily chomped them down for all their lives.

Don't be surprised if he finds that piece. I've noticed that our Betta love to hunt for 'lost' pieces of food - sometimes they'll look like they're standing on their head trying to get into the substrate after a piece of food. LOL - and when we started out, I remember reading that Bettas would only eat food from above.

You won't have any trouble with him and his Pea Treats then. Good for him. He is a well behaved little boy and you may tell him I said so.
