Stressed out beta

Hey guys

I am a new beta owner and thought I was doing very well until now...my beta, fondly known as SpiderFish seems stressed out today & I'm worried he might die. I have had him a couple months now & today I did what I normally do and that is to clean his tank, pebbles & plant. Everything remains the same just is cleaner. When I put him back into his tank he seemed lifeless and refused to move. He moves form time to time but not like normal. He stays at the surface and every now and then he'll take large gulps of air which he never used to do. He has never acted like this before after a routine cleaning. PLEASE HELP!

Welcome to Fishlore. I hope we can help your SpiderFish.

What is the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates readings on the tank? What's the water temp and does he have an air stone or something like that? What do you use to treat your tap water? Does he show any visible signs of something wrong/changed? Does he eat? What's his usual diet and does his stomach look bloated?

It sounds like a water problem of some type and could have been a temperature shock or nitrate problem. But like Dave says we really need more information. If you could let us know your tank size and what the situation he is in it would help. Is your tank cycled or filtered at all? Do you heat it?

Do you change his water daily, weekly, or how often and how much at a time? What do you feed him and how much?

Thanks for coming here and welcome to Fishlore.com.

Hi!

I'm not going to repeat what Dave and Rose said for the sake of not boring you. However - I think that what you viewed to be good for him is acctualy bad. You shouldn't 'clean' the tank - only siphon and water change. When you take the fish out and put him in an alien environment, he is stressed and when he gets back most likely a lot of the beneficial bacteria will be dead. Please don't do it again - more harm than help done there!
