Popeye

Is this popeye? She has ragged fins also, it all went bad over night! I can't believe this. She is the sweetest thing. Water temp. is 80. bubbles going, water changed right away, pH was 7.8, no amonia, HELP please.

I am not sure from this angle. Do you have any more pictures?

Hi!

I can't really tell because of the angle.

It looks like popeye and I'd treat her with Maracyn-Two and Rid-Fungus to treat popeye and potential finrot. A 50% water change before starting treatment would be good. Both things are very treatable.

Popeye or eye cloud....a fungus med would get rid of that quickly, follow the instructions. Hope your fish will be fine.

Popeye is a water quality problem a lot of the time and due to higher than normal nitrates which may or may not mean overfeeding. How much are you feeding and is he eating it all? Water changes and as Dave said MaracynII and Rid Fungus will make quick work of it. Clean water is the most important thing though to prevent eye damage.

It is not usually a serious problem if you get right on it though. It is a symptom not a disease and easily controlled if you get the water under control.

Did a water change as soon as I saw her. The only thing I have handy is plain Maracyn, but it says for popeye. Might be able to get out in the next couple of days. Should I do daily water changes, say 25% until it clears up? I have only had her a week plus, so haven't really gotten a routine started. Her fins look bad, better today though, not so raw? looking. This is the best pic I have for now. Will try to get a head on.

25% per day is fine

Is this any better of a pic? The eye looks about the same, she is eating and doing well. I feed her twice a day, 2-3 pellets or bloodworms(2), or some flakes alternately.

Definitely looks like popeye.

For bloodworms, I recommend just Hikari frozen bloodworms. The freeze-dried ones are real good at constipating bettas and they can use food that isn't dry as part of the weekly diet.

Once nitrates get up over 20 it is hard to bring them down again. Starting off with 2 x 25% changes a day until the popeye clears up or until you can maintain 5-10 for nitrates would be what I would recommend. Then after that, instead of just relying on a schedule for water changes, test your water and any time the nitrates get up over 10 do a change. This should really help the fin rot also. Good Luck

Good News

I can "see" Sweet Ums' eye!!!!! It still looks like it has a little rip, but it is better.
ALSO,,, I went to the lfs to pick a 'veggie' clip and this adorable little guy follows me (ok "I say he was following me"!), and is just watching everything. He looked like he was way in the wrong place,,, so, I brought him home. He is a little camera shy, but will get a pic. as soon as I can.

Thanks for all your help with Sweet Ums'!

2 legs or 4? You have to watch the little ones, they are sneaky, especially when they are camera shy! I'm glad Sweet Um's feeling better...

The new guy

o.k., when my husband got home, I had to be real nice because I brought this little guy home. I told him the whole story of how he didn't belong there at the lfs, and how he just lured me in!!! I told him there was no way anyone could resist that face (I finally convinced "Abe L.", that since he had a name he had to let me take pics today!) I was like, "honest hon, he was irristable!", that's how I came up with Abe L. lol So... here he is

Well Abe L., you did a marvelous job of posing for the camera and are you not the handsomest young man!! I love his color and his face is just precious. He does indeed have a very honest face for a stalker .

I do hope that your husband will let you go out again soon.

Welcome to Fishlore, Missouri. You are not too far from me I guess. I am in SE Nebraska.
