Can you keep females in a community tank?

Yes.
I have done so dozens of times, over the years.

Are female Bettas fairly peaceful? Or is it a "lucky thing" like a male in a community tank? Would they nip livebearer tails?

It really depends on the fish.
I think one thing that helped me out is that the tanks i did this in were very heavily planted. This kept the more aggressive females of seeing the other females as much.

Hi!

My guppys almost lost their tail to a female Betta, but it depends on the individual Betta and the conditions.

It has been my experience that the females were more aggressive than the males toward the other tank mates but then like most fish it does depend on the betta. Misty was a true sweetheart and so was the male Noel, Marty and Marty Jr. are terrors and so was Emma (my most murderous fish).

So it really depends on the individual fish.

Yeah, my old betta Norma was fine with platy fry. But as Chickadee and HatchetHaven and Dino said it all depends on the betta.

I think you're making the right choice. My two lived together for a while, but their fins were never quite whole. I've since separated them. Still, occasionally one will jump the divider and they are rough on each other and the damage is immediate. I mean, in a matter of minutes.

I guess I am lucky.

My first female betta has been very peaceful in my community tank. She mostly stays to herself but at feeding time comes up with the rest of the tank and doesn't bother the others and they don't bother her. She is in with Angels, rasboras, corys, 1 small pleco, and a few snails.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, plants seem a great addition. As I have planted more of my tank they all seem mellower.
