The fish of dreams...

Hi!

I have recently received a 47gallon tank for christmas (See sig) that let me take out all the fish from my 8 gallon. I plan to keep a betta in there - as for me they are 'the fish of dreams'.

I've also heard that we have a similar sized tank in the shed (Digging it out this weekend!). I have heater for that size tank and I'm getting a Sponge filter for it soon. I'm going to use it as a Betta tank of course!

So - here's my question. I love male and female Bettas. I heard females get along some places - and that they don't get along other places. I was thinking maybe Having 2 females together in one of the tanks instead of a lone male. Do you think that would work? Please help me.

Two females won't work. With only each other to pick on, they're likely to fight and bicker non-stop until one or both are sick or dead. Female betta tanks are very touchy, and it's not recommended to use a tank that small in any case. Large (20 gal) tanks, very heavily planted with a population of at least 10 fish may increase the odds of success but no guarantee.

You could divide the 8 gal tank into 3 parts, with a female in each section or two females/one male, or whatever combo!

Hi!

Thanks for the quick response! I'd love a female Betta tank like the one you described. I'll see if I can get some sort of divider. Do you know of any household objects that could be used?

I guess this might be pushing the limit a bit - but what about 3 females? Like you do with gouramis - give the male more than one female to pick on.

The only time keeping multiple females together works is if they have been raised together as fry, you have at least 4-5 of them, and the tank is large and has a ton of hiding places. The females can be as aggressive as the males if they are not raised together. If you want more than one, you could divide the tank in half and have 2.

I think there's some people here who've made dividers from that plastic craft sheet stuff...maybe someone can give you the details.

Hi!

I guess that's something for the DIY board. I'll check if they have a project on it in a mo...

I'm deffo using one tank as a Male Betta tank. Do you know if Tank dividers (Ready made) are very expensive?

Hi!

Yesterday - we where going down to the LFS to get some stuff. (Plant fertilizer, A filter for my new Betta tank...)
Now - obviously I had a look at the fish... And what did I see? Well - for a start absolutely NO ill fish; and a beautiful Betta. He is crimson, with a violet body and emerald where his tail meets his body. He was 110% healthy... No nipped fins - nothing! Perfect. I just had to buy him - I did - and he is now swimming happily in my 8 gallon tank. I'm getting 3 otos to accompany him soon.

The only ready made dividers I have ever bought were sized for a 15 gallon but could be cut down and were $10.00. I think it is terrible considering that they were so flimsy that they will not work for anything and so I could not even use them.

I made mine out of a sheet of Plexiglas.

There's a sticky about making a divider, using report cover binders and craft plastic. It worked very well for me.
