Might sound like a dumb question...

Is it possible to breed 2 different types of Bettas together, such as a male betta splendens with a female betta smaragdina (I think that's what she is, heck, the people at the petstore sure as heck don't, only thing they know is to hock their wears). I don't know, this is my first time trying to breed anything.

Hi!

Well - it is possible. But inbreeding is very hard and I think you'de need a male and female of both kinds of fish.

I am unsure if that is possible or not, but I am posting to welcome you to Fishlore and to advise you to please watch the language. I editted the language out of your post and am just giving a friendly reminder of the rules you had to agree to in order to join Fishlore.

Thanks!

Hi Scott, are you experienced in betta breeding? i'm not and i would say if you are as uncertain enough to ask on for advice here then i'say wait a while. I'm not saying NEVER but maybe research first?!

Whatever you decide, good luck and give your fish the care and respect every living creature deserves

First of all, do you know how much equipment is necessary to breed bettas?

1 10 gallon breeding tank (not the tank you house them in)

1 5 gallon or larger tank to allow the female to recuperate in

1 55 gallon or larger growth tank for the females

at least 100 or more quart sized jars to use for individual males as soon as they are sexed

Then you need to make sure that there are daily water changes to each and every one of the above containers when the fry are free swimming and that is not a chore for the faint of heart.

You have to provide constant total physical presence at the mating or you WILL lose one or both of your breeding pair. They are not called Siamese Fighting Fish for nothing and at breeding time they are the most touchy of all. The females are just as violent as the males and if they are not properly conditioned first you may not get any breeding done anyway, just a horrible fight.

If you want to breed fish there are many others who breed just by being in the same tank together and with no help. Betta breeding is hard and touchy and dangerous to your fish if you do not know what you are doing. It truly is a job best left to those who have had some training or at least have a lot of help to share the workload. The professionals have 24 hour a day staff and they do still lose a breeding pair occasionally. There are some who decide to go ahead and try it and some may get a few fish out of it, but unless all the water care is done and all the parameters in the water are kept at perfect levels the fins of the fish will be deformed or they will die. Betta breeding is hard and there is no two ways around it. It really is best left to professionals.

If you want to breed fish, try the livebearers as they are really much simpler and the success ratio is better.
