Brought home a new betta!!!

No pics yet, still letting him settle in before blinding him with light. He's in a 10 gallon tank, and has pretty much just swam back and forth along the length of the tank so far. Not exploring much yet, still probably kind of freaked out. His tank isn't the most optimal set up right now, it's just on a chair that leans back a bit. It's a very sturdy chair, so no problems there, but not too sure if the slant back messes with the current In any event, he will have a level table to be on in the next couple of weeks.

The tank has some of the polished rocks, a neat ave with several entrances, a java fern, and another nice plant that looks like a bunch of tiny pine needles (but very soft).

He's a red veil tail....when me and my girlfriend were at Petsmart getting the stuff for the tank, we both said at the same time that he stood out so we knew we had to take him home. I gave him a bit of a thawed pea while he was still in his cup and have tried to feed him a pellet tonight, but he hasn't figured out that the open flap means food yet. He might have a bit of fin rot, not too sure on that yet. He's tiny, so he's got alot of growing to do (and a lot of time to figure out where everything is in his tank).

Hopefully tomorrow he'll be ready for some pictures

Glad you rescued a new little guy! Can't wait for pics!

Be careful with the tank on an uneven surface. Make sure it doesn't develop a crack from the uneven stress...

Thanks!

The tank is uneven by maybe 3/4ths of an inch. Would that be a problem for a couple of weeks, or should we go ahead and move it?

Sounds like he's exploring his new world and I bet he's like "what do i do with all this space!" They sure love to swim laps along the length, don't they?

Yep, he's still exploring a bit....he's started to check out his cave and plants some, but he's swimming a bunch of laps around the tank! Haven't turned on the lights for him yet, want him to get a bit settled in before he undergoes yet another change.

As for the tank itself, we've got it on a level surface now. There is less current, which is helping him out a bit more.

I was able to get some pictures of him, but need my girlfriend to upload them to her computer before I can get them for you guys.

Also, still not too sure if he has fin rot or not. It has not gotten any worse since he's been here, just clean water and vitamins for him. Can't wait to show him off to everyone

Congrats on the great rescue!! Red veil tails are so beautiful. It is funny how both of you decided at the same time he should be yours. I am sure he thinks he is in heaven in that 10g tank.

I am looking forward to pictures , soon!!

Still not sure if he has finrot or not, but if he does it has not progressed any since he's come to his new home. Enjoy the pics

wow this is very nice, he'll be very happy! Congrats on a great rescue! Careful only feeding betta pellets, I've found many Betta don't like them. Bloodworms, Daphnia, Crushed Gamorus, and Betta Flakes all work well for Betta, I give mine a combination of what I mentioned. =3 Good luck and I hope he lives happily!

He's very handsome! Looks like he's enjoying exploring his new home!

My bettas like pellets, but variety is still a good thing.

Right now, while I'm getting used to feeding him, I'm keeping him only on pellets....will venture off to a combo of cyclopeeze, blood worms, brine shrimp, and daphnia (though neither of my other two like daphnia or brine shrimp). He'll have a chance to have a very wide variety if he chooses.

Did you say YOU are getting used to feeding HIM? We all now know who's the boss! Congrats, he's beautiful!

Your tank looks great, neat swim through caves, and the substrate pebbles look nice and smooth and I like the colours. He is a beauty....and his colour may get to be even more beautiful once he settles in.

If he does have a bit of fin rot, only you can tell, perhaps the clean warm water and the new stress free environment will help him to heal without medications. That is what I did with Tiny King when he got a bit of fin rot. It didn't clear up overnight, but I personally believe he is healthier not having meds in the water all the time.

BTW what is his name??

He's a beauty! I'm not 100% sure from the pics, but I don't see finrot in those and would just keep an eye on him.. maybe add vita-chem daily (1 drop per gallon). We do that always, healthy or not.

Just named him, his name is Deuce as a tribute to one of my favorite all-time Alabama football players, David Palmer

Yep, Deuce definitely has fin rot Part of his tail turned ragged this morning. Guess it's time to pick up some more meds!

I'd look for rid-fungus and trisulfa to treat it.

Even though I have some rid fungus, I would rather stick with the triple sulfa for now. It's ragged, so it would probably be the bacterial kind of fin rot, correct. I also have some medicated food pellets to feed him. Hopefully the fin rot was caught early enough that it won't be an ongoing battle (hey, I can be optimistic, right).

We found that using the combo was what finally got rid of Aslan's reoccuring finrot and with Rid-Fungus being herbal, I didn't mind adding some. The thing was he never showed fungal finrot signs, but it kept coming back anyway when we did just triple sulfa.

It does sound like you're dealing with bacterial finrot though.

The finrot is healing VERY nicely. If it comes back, I'll add the Rid-Fungus as well. His tail has grown quite a bit over the last week. If you check out the pictures in this thread, you can see where one part of his tail seems to stick out further than the rest. The tail has grown out to close to that point

After, oh, 8 days of everything improving/looking great all it took was a few hours after the filter went in for it to come back. Got the Rid-Fungus to add with this next batch of meds. Ahhhhhhhh, the fun, wonderful life of treating fin rot Since Deuce came home with fin rot and has been on fish meds (including food) I haven't been able to give him blood worms or cyclopeeze or anything else yet. I'm sure he'll like them, he even seems to like his anti-bacterial fish food
