Tank heater

Is there a type of little tank heater i can buy. My tank is pretty small only about 2 gal. and I think i need a heater. Or is that what my little light is for?

I have a 2 gallon tank and I bought a Tetra Whisper 50 watt heater. So far, it has worked out great for us!

A 50W heater for a 2 gallon tank is too much wattage. You run the risk of cooking your fish. The rule is 5W per gallon. Wal-mart has some heaters that are only about 7W. That is what both of you need. Drs. Foster & Smith carries a 10W. Here is the link:

I use submersible 25 watt heaters in my 2.5 gal tanks and they work perfectly.

I just went to petsmarts and the smallest heater they had was 50watt. So, you say wat-mart should have a 7watt heater? Okay great! Thanks alot!!
OH btw... I also bought a submersible Digital Thermometer. Its nice. I think it was only like 8.99. and I went ahead and got some 100% Pure Freeze Dried Blood Worms.
I hope my betta likes them! Thanks everyone

I beg to differ. Like I said, I have a Tetra submersible 50W heater in my 2 gallon tank. It has an internal thermometer that is set to 78. Once it reaches that temp, it turns off. The label on the box indicated that the heater would work with tanks from 2-10 gallons so I was very comfortable with my purchase. At least if I chose to upgrade, the heater will work well with a larger tank. In my opinion, using a heater with lower wattage will only take much longer to warm up and the heater will constantly be on.

By the way, I also bought my heater at Walmart.

This is what I used in my 2.5 gallon also, the Top Fin version from Pet Smart. It just took space which is not plentiful in that size tank!

Check the 7 watt from Wal Mart, if it's the same one I looked at I'm not sure it has any kind of thermostat. Made me nervous.

I went to Wal-Mart last night and picked up one of the 7.5watt JUNIOR SMALL AQUARIUM HEATER. I put it in my 1.5 gal. tank. The heater is recommended for 2-5 gal tanks. But I think it will be fine in my 1.5 gal. I also bought a submersible Digital Thermometer yesturday so I could watch the temperature. So, I didn't have to worry.
Do yall think I should leave the heater on all the time?

It depends on the temperature of your house as well as how much it heats the tank. Monitor the temp closely the next few days at different times of the day. If you see the temperature fluctuating along with the temperature in the house, put the heater on a timer that corresponds to the timer on the house heat (if you use one). If you don't, then just set the heater timer to turn on and off to keep the temp constant.

Home Depot sells appliance timers (about $10) that have 3 on/off settings. Here is the link to the one I use for my AC units. I only suggest this one because it is for appliances instead of lights:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...8&pcatid=11368 - this is what I'd recommend. Or a 25W Visitherm stealth (but it's bigger). We use them in tanks as smal as 2.5g with no trouble.

The problem with the heater that you got at walmart is that it just heats, but doesn't aim for a temperature so you can end up with a lot of temperature fluctuations or a cooked fish.
