If a crown tail gets fin rot....

will the tail be split, or will the "prongs" or "rays" (whatever you want to call them) at the end of the tail go away? Or will the tail just appear to be split in between the "rays"? No real concerns here, just arming myself with the most powerful weapon....knowledge

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking either could happen. I think that regular tailed bettas can get finrot cases that eat away the rays or that will just cause splits in between them. I assume it would be the same for CTs. But I don't know for sure.

I think the thing to look for would be changes in his fins, particularly fin loss. We only have 1 male combtail who's never had fin rot so I'm not sure from experience what it looks like.

Not too sure if he has finrot or not....he has what appears to be a new "split" between a couple of rays/prongs, but I'm worried about medicating him if he does not need it. Been adding extra vita-chem, but have not seen any improvement on the split. On the plus hand, the split has not gotten any worse.

Maybe he just blew his fin...does he flare a lot?

Not really....but he does occasionally. Hadn't thought of that, but can easily see that as a possibility now. Thank you

I dunno, I have a ct who flares a ton and never seen any fin damage. I don't know but I would guess the hm's are a lot likelier to blow fins.

A sudden split like that does sound like a blown fin, some are more prone to that than others. Our betta Sora was always getting those.

Well, I think I found out what it is. He likes to wrap his tail around the intake part of the filter from time to time. I bet he rips it doing that. Guess I'll cover that up with some panty hose or a sponge or something.

I'd recommend using the netting from a regular small net. It allows smaller things to get in easier and won't clog as easily.

Glad you figured out the cause. Hope his fin doesn't give any more problems.
