Frogs with bettas

I decided to added dwarf african frogs to my male crowntail's (Cinderella - my 4 yr olds idea tank (2.5 gallons). They are getting along wonderfully! They have now been together for about 3 or 4 months.

I feed the betta first with 1 or 2 pellets then add some blood worms. So far it is working. Cinderella joins them and eats a worm or two also.

Once in a while the frogs mistake the tail for a worm, at feeding time, but other than that they seem happy together.

I mentioned this to my LFS and they said - "Hmmm ... you might of found something new."

Has anyone else tried this? Does anyone see a downside to this?

Lots of people try this combination. Sometimes it works, other times not. Depends on the temperament of your betta, as some will allow no living creatures in their tanks.

Or, it seems to work in the beginning and then the betta decides he doesn't want any roommates after all.

Hope yours continues to be peaceful!

yep, tried it had the same result. i even tried a frog with everyone of my bettas.. never had a problem. my bettas love attention and enjoy having roommates to share food with. however... the bettas dont really like it when the frogs go to the surface of the water to get a breath.. scares them half to death.. congrats

As a note it's better if the frog (or anything else besides the betta) is added first to the tank, or sometimes the betta will harrass the new "intruder". But I'm glad to hear yours are getting along. I'd love to have frogs or something with mine but they're both too aggressive and won't tolerate tankmates. Sure makes for a nice combo when they do get along.

Sounds like it's working, so just keep an eye out for signs of the truce failing. Hopefully it won't though and it sounds like Cinderella is pretty mellow. We'd love to see pics of the tank.

I would recommend upgrading them to at least a 5g tank when you can as they're overtaxing the bioload of a 2.5g tank.

Cinderella and her tank mates decided now was not the time to share the same part of the tank. Hopefully I can get a better shot with them all together later.

So here he is:
