Do bettas breed only their same color?

I am considering getting a female betta for my guy and seeing if they mate. Of course I would keep them separated, but my question is: If they are both purple, will all their babies be purple? What if one is purple and one is yellow? How do you know what colors all the babies will be?
Thank you, I want to know what you all have seen.

Not necessarily, it depends on what genetics are in their background.

Again it depends on their genetic back ground. You won't get all one color.

Like Carol said, it is all about genetic backgrounds. Hereditary betta traits, colors, shapes, patterns, etc are very complicated. They do not use a simple Punnent Square to determine, as many living things do.

if u think about it.. thats kindof a common sense question because just because a person has lets say blonde hair that doesnt mean their offspring will have blonde hair.. its all based on resessive and dominent genes... elementary my dear

I apologize if my assumption is not correct but from your post I'm guessing you don't have a ton of experience about betta breeding. Breeding bettas takes a HUGE amount of time and money and needs a lot of knowledge and experience on the part of the breeder. You need a huge tank for the female fry, and a ton of individual containers of at least 2.5 gals for each of the males, as well as a way to heat & clean all the tank which probably requires a special heated room and a lot of time spent changing water. You'll need live food for the fry and to be willing to put in the huge amount of time and effort that is necessary to raise them. Also you need to be very knowledgeable about the mating process because if you make any mistakes, one of the pair could get injured or killed by the other. In short breeding bettas is not suggested for anyone unless they have a lot of experience with bettas and are willing to put in the huge amount of time and money required. Also you should have good quality bettas to begin with, not just pet store bettas...there is no point in reproducing poor quality stock and you will find it hard to get rid of such fry except by sending them to the pet store where they'll not be taken care of properly. Breeding fish can be very rewarding and if you are willing to do the research and buy all the proper equipment then that's great, but realize that it's a whole lot more than simply "seeing if they mate".

I understand the temptation to breed such beautiful fish. But it really is so much time, money, work and takes so much room that we can't do it. Even just introducing them to each other safely is a long, step-by-step procedure. The genetics of Betta breeding is very interesting and even with show Bettas, you don't always get the fry that you want.
With store Bettas, I think it's like spinning the wheel and you could get all kinds of results.
