My first betta (Belle)

During a fall festival, just before Halloween, my daughter won a goldfish. I headed to the LFS and got a Marina Goldfish Tank. Well, after living with us for 3 months, poor Goldie passed away this weekend. My daughter was a bit sad so I went out and got a betta (cause thats what I have always wanted). We have named her Belle. She currently resides in the goldfish tank. My concern is that we don't have a heater. I was thinking of getting a 25w heater but will that be too much? I really don't have the option right now of getting a bigger tank. I just don't have the space for it. Also, I have a 1 year old that is cruising around and reaching for stuff so I've had to put the tank on my kitchen counter and out of the baby's reach.

Bettas are a lot of fun...I'm sure you'll be glad you got one.

A few questions first...what size is the tank?
Is there a filter?
Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?
Do you have test kits for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?
What & how much are you feeding?
How often do you change the water & how much do you change?

Heat is necessary for a betta to stay healthy - the optimum temp is 80. If the tank is 2.5 gals or bigger then a 25w heater is fine. If it's less than that then I'd highly recommend getting a bigger tank, preferrably 5 but if that's not possible a 2.5-3gal would be acceptable if not ideal.

A 25W heater won't be too much, we've even used them without a problem in the smallest tanks that we have (2.5g). It might not be strong enough though if your tank is over 5g.

I'm sorry, I thought I had mentioned the size of the tank. Its 2 gallons. It has a filter. I do 25% weekly water changes. I don't have a test kit or thermometer to check water temp. I feed Top Fin betta pellets once a day (twice if I'm not rushing in the morning).

I guess you could try heating the tank with a 25w but it'd be a lot better if you could get a bigger tank. You'll need to keep a very close eye on the temp since it can fluctuate easily in that small of a tank, which is stressful to the fish. I highly recommend getting at least a 5gal if possible...the betta will be a lot happier and it is easier to maintain a larger tank.

You should definately get test kits and a thermometer. The temp should stay at 80. Here's a link explaining the nitrogen cycle http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm You'll need test kits to test your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The best kits are the API liquid tests-get either the Master test kit or individual kits for the three (the other tests that come with the master kit are nice to have but you probably won't need them). Since you just got the betta the tank probably isn't cycled, and you may see high levels of ammonia and nitrite. It's important to test these since they can kill fish. It may be necessary to do water changes more often till the tank's done cycling.

As for food Top Fin isn't the greatest brand as far as nutrition goes...the best ones are Omega One and Hikari. The best commonly available betta pellets are Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets. It's also nice to give them more variety than just pellets-a lot of bettas like bloodworms (hikari brand is best). The amount you are feeding is good.

I'd recommend these pellets for him. 3 in the AM, 3 in the PM.

Top Fin foods were part of the fish food recall and I'm wary of them, even newer batches. The Betta Pro pellets are just the right size for Betta mouths, even our smallest female has no trouble with them.

Giving them thawed frozen bloodworms (Hikari brand is the only kind we buy) 1 day a week and thawed, peeled frozen peas 1 day a week helps their systems and gives them a break from having the same food all the time.

I think the 25w would be fine, but I'd agree on a larger tank. The only thing I recommend buying at Petco is their 6.6g bookshelf tank - so perfect for a betta. Long, not too tall and plenty of room for them to swim laps or play in the toys that you can put in there.

Just a little update on my Belle, she is doing so well. I'm so thrilled! I got a little 50W heater and noticed a huge difference. She seems much happier now and I am too.
