Close call early this morning

Early hours this morning, one of the cats jumped up onto the hood of the 30g divided betta tank. When scampering to get off, as he heard me coming, the hood and lighting unit were knocked off into the tank. Thankfully the light was not on so I was able to get it out quickly. But since the unit was ½ submerged I am not going to chance using it.

Needless to say I am relieved that nothing bad came from the incident but I'm pretty

Wow.. that was a close call! Good thing your light was turned off!

I had the light/hood fall into the tank myself... and it was turned on! I use it for the light as I am vacuuming the tank, in my case, good thing the light unit didnt get wet, I grabbed it just as the outside part of the hood went in. As for my cats.. lol they are too old to even think about climbing up and jumping into the tank..

What can you do now to make sure your cat doesnt do that again? Seems that it was trying to get to the fish....and most likely will try again.

Wow, scary! Naughty kitty!

For awhile, try putting strips of double-sided tape on the hood. Most cats very much dislike anything sticking to their paws and should learn to keep away.

They don't usually try to get up there and at first I also thought he was trying to get to the fish. Turns out they had no water in their bowls and he was thirsty.

So I'm not too mad at him. I will be having words with the rest of the family though as it is their responsibility to make sure the cats (4 of them) have food and water in their bowls at all times. Part of the house

The cats were that thirsty they even smashed my coffee pot trying to get to the water in the bottom & D with no coffee is not a good thing in this house.

I'm so glad everyone turned out ok for you. I have something worse that cats. I have a toddler who likes to feed the fish. Once I was in the washroom and she saw her chance and decided to share her butterscotch pudding the the fishies. She was so proud of herself for sharing. I wasn't so proud of her. I pulled the fish out right away, added some slime coat, and cleaned the enitre tank. I was so scared. Didn't loose any fish though and now the fish tank lid is secured with a couple bungie cords

But Mama...Dont be mad at her.
At least she did not "wash" the fish with soap and running tap water like my sister and I did when we were 4 yrs old.

This didn't result in the light going in the tank, just the BIRD!

We have a parakeet who flies loose in the house. He has learned to take a "bath" in my 55 gallon, with a hood! The first time I saw this it really freaked me OUT . I saw his little feet churning and he "swam" from one end of the tank to the other. I grabbed him out, all soaking wet, and thought he was one lucky bird not to drown. Well as time has passed I realize this silly bird likes to swim with the fish, and he does it routinely. He starts by dipping in one end, sometimes climbing down an air tube. When he gets into the water he heads for the other end and climbs out!! The cleanest bird in town!

Susitna-Flower, you should totally get a video clip posted of the bird doing that!

Video - oh yes! That is SO cool! Two of my lovebirds try to bathe in the tank, but I've always shooed them off. Maybe I should let them have a bathe!

And pudding? Bo gets excited when he sees a yogurt cup! Actually he makes me feel a bit guilty for eating lunch at my desk and not sharing.

You could win 10000 dollars on America's Funniest Home Video's. Think of the fish tank you could buy the bird to swim in then!

This we've gotta see! Another vote for a video! Please!?

HarleyMan, I'm glad nothing really bad happened with your cat incident, other than having to replace some equipment. Hope you've had a talk with the kittie-waterkeepers by now.

Well I was a little mad with the particular cat but then again I couldn't blame him since he was thirsty. Incidently, I left the light unit off for 24 hours then plugged it up to see if it still worked - did this outside btw - and lo and behold it came on as if nothing had happened. So I didn't even need to get a new light unit in the end. And I took the tape advice btw too.
