Is my betta a boy or a girl?

Sorry for the quality of these photos (cellphone) They don't do justice to this betta's beautiful colors.

This betta is blowing what looks to me like bubble nests, but the container it came in said it was a female. She/it is bright purple with an orange head.

Just waiting for aquarium to arrive (don't mind the bowl, it's temporary)
Thanks

Certainly Male. Big flowy fins and a neck flare. (don't know technical name for it) Bubble nesting reinforces it. The cup lied to you. lol

yep... its a male Betta. They must have gotten the labeling mixed up when they put them in their cups at the LFS.

You are right in my humble opinion folks. A lovely male combtail, it is.

For be sure without hurting him, just put a mirror in front of him if he reacts, is male.

Sorry Ivaneduardo, but that information is false.

Female betta splendens react to reflections also. The best way to tell is by the finnage. Female betta splendens almost always have smaller fins, as well as an exposed ovapositor if you get her ready to breed.

My RIP Honey would flare at mirrors!!She was a fiesty minx so NO mirrors (sadly) don't help sexing bettas. Also i have a new male that i bought as a TINY female, within days i knew i had a male. Mistaking the sex when they are so small is easily done once they are in better conditions you see a BIG change in them!!

Yeah I have a female who flares a lot too. The only for sure way to sex mature bettas is that females have an oviposter--a white spot, about the size of a grain of salt under their belly. Usually you can tell because males usually have much longer fins and a different body shape but this isn't the case always.
