Female Bettas are a fairly recent addition here in Southern California, at least as far as I've noticed. Having a community tank, I would pass by the Bettas in their little plastic cups when going to look at the other freshwater fish. Salespeople would always tell me Bettas liked to be in small, confined spaces and were not suitable for a community tank. It wasn't until one of my co-workers told me that wasn't true that I tried it for myself. My first Betta Streak, is incredibly happy in my 55 gallon. I have 3 other Bettas, Turq and Flame the 2nd in a 2.5 gallon tank and Zircon in a one gallon tank, which I realize is not ideal, but is better than a vase or small bowl. And I recently read on a package of Hikari Betta food:

"You can keep a betta with other gentle fish in a large aquarium."

So spread the word!

That guy is an idiot. Male or female, dropsy is a symptom of a variety of illnesses and most cases are probably due to the way the stores 'care' for them.
