female bettas

ok so ,

my tanks is running and cycling as I type. I am going to wait a week before putting anything in it.

Would a female beta be ok in a tank with other fish?

I am thinking of getting some tetras and some other fish, maybe a cherry or gold barb but i still have to make my mind up.

thanks

P.S It's a 10gl tank

How big is the tank? I wouldn't put any Betta (male/female) with barbs or tetras as they tend to be nippy and might nip the betta's fins. Also some females can be quite aggressive and may not appreciate tankmates, other than a few catfish.

Cherry barbs won't nip any fins, but I would worry about them being chased/attacked by the betta.

Yeah, and also cherries should have a bigger tank as they are pretty active to my knowledge.

You must never get just one of these fish. It will be miserable and will hide.

A 10 gal could hold 3 cherry barbs - 2 females and one male. Plants and hiding places are needed to make them feel secure.

how long has your tank been cycling for? please do not just wait a week as many lps' suggest but wait until nitrates and nitrites levels are 0 or very low.

My Cherry barbs turned out to be terrible fin nippers, i got up one day to find one guppy dead, fins and tail a mess and another being attacked, it too died in my hosp tank a few hours later!! These are fish i adore and would recommend but would say please keep this in mind.

Also they are schooling fish so i'd say 5 minimum, if you have other schooling fish they may join together as mine have!

Wow, I've had cherries for more than 15 years, and gold barbs before that and never have seen them show aggression of any kind towards anything at all.

Just goes to show that rules are made to be broken!

From my experience they can get along in a large community tank I had a 42g with 2 female betta and a bunch of live bearers & Glowlight tetra.
But I have also had them in with other female betta and it worked ok for 2 months then due to illness the dominant fish decided to attach the other ones. She killed the sick one so now they have separate/divided tanks.
So I'd just have her alone if you can't have a huge community tank.

Barbrella, i love my barbs and for months the tank was peaceful, it just exploded one night!! I have 2 very good LF stores and one guy said he'd had years of great cherry barbs and then they went nuts!! Killed stuff! My Cherry barbs now have an 'ASBO' against them 'anti social behaviour order'!!!! Love them.

I would urge anybody to keep bettas in a single tank. Better to be safe than sorry!!

Yeah, it's definately safest to keep them alone or with a few peaceful catfish (though even that doesn't always work).
