Cleo almost boilled ! Stupid heater !

Remember Cleo my betta male with the never ending fin rot (stain) of his tal ?
Well I thought I should upgrade his tank and move him in the 5 gal.
Thank God I came home ! The tank was about to boil ! The heater was burning and the water was more than 34 Celsius.
The fish seemed fine. I put ice and freezbies and cooled it down. Also changed some water ... I hope not too fast but I was so scared.
Now he is swimming. I think Cleo's luck is running out !

Poor Cleo! Very lucky you came home.

I think we've all experienced heaters blowing out and cooking or nearly cooking our fish.

we just had a heater go like that on us a few weeks ago.. i'm glad you got there in time to save him from the heater. As far as his fins go: VitaChem (or another liquid vitamin) and Fish Protector are what i'd give him daily doses of to help his fins grow back faster.

He is handsome. Is there a alarm on the market for aquaruims, that you could set to a min & max temp. so if the heater failed a light would flash.

My husband was right when he adviced me to keep the room hot and forget about heaters ... But it's winter in Canada ..... and it's really cold here .....lucky australians

Good to see you could save Cleo before the heat overcame him. We, too, have had good luck with the Visi-Therm heaters (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...m?pcatid=12060).

As for heaters with a heater failure warning system, these might be of interest (though I've not tried one): http://www.aquariumguys.com/rena-heaters.html

i used to recommend visitherm heaters, but 2 of the 3 visitherm deluxe heaters that we had went into "cook fish" mode and we're replacing the 3rd before it can try to cook our Betta, Angel.

If you get a visitherm - DON'T get the deluxe, get the stealth. As for us, we still bought visitherms for all the tanks after the 1st one died figuring heaters occasionally break, but after 2 (the 2nd one only 3-4 months old) it was time for a new brand and we've gone to Hydor Theo heaters.

So annoying about these heaters! They could so easily jeopardise everything at the slightest problem. Two of mine stopped working on the same night! Grrrr!

Good luck with your choice of new heater.

You have one very good looking boy there!! I'm glad you got home in time!

I live in fear of these heaters after reading some of these posts. I noticed Spots water temp had shot up yesterday as he was acting rather odd. I've turned the heater to minimum and placed his tank on the worktop over the boiller and that is keeping him warm. I have monitored the temp ( even got up during night to keep eye on it) so far so good 30 hours later.

But what a stunning face your boy has!!

I use the Stealth heaters made by Marineland in all my tanks and have never had a problem with one.

I'm glad to hear you made it home in time and your fish are ok.

Now I am really worried .... With those heaters I can cook a 20G full of fishes !
And I have here 6 mo of cold to worry about !
That heater that went crazy was working for one month, only.

Maybe Marineland .....
Thank you.

one of those heaters with the temp. warning sounds like it would give you more peace of mind about the tank conditions when you're out.

The only thing is when I read the description of the heaters with the warning system, they have to be 5 degrees off before they will do the warning thing. This is too far off to be safe either. I do use the Visitherm Stealth heaters in 3 of my tanks but Gunnie got me started too on Titanium heaters and I really like them too. They do a good job of keeping a steady temperature and are very small. The other thing that I like about them is that the temperature control is on the plug and not on the heater in the water. We have very hard water and I think this is safer and less likely to have plaque build up due to the calcification and cause a failure. So far I have had no problems with the Visitherm Stealth and I do like their looks in the tank, but I also tried the Visitherm Deluxe and had a couple of them explode in my tanks and spray glass shards all over the place. This means literally throwing away most of the things in the tank to make sure you get all the the little pieces of glass so I will NEVER use a glass based heater again. (Visitherm or any other brand)
