| New tank for Teddy Bear Yesterday, we picked up a new tank for Teddy Bear. It was time for him to move out of his 2.5g tank since he's been moving around much better than when we got him. After driving around and looking at tanks, we found a tank perfect for him. It's 6.6g, about as long as a 10g but maybe 2/3 of the height and depth of a 10g. So he gets a nice 'run' to swim along and doesn't have to go too far up for air.
The tank has a slight bowfront to it and a fluorescent tube, which we'll replace with a 4200k natural sunlight tube peaking in the yellow range. we're also going to order him more silk broadleaf plants. He loves his new neighbor, Kairi, and his hamster igloo (gotta love hamster toys ). Last edited by COBettaCouple; October 30th, 2007 at 10:04 AM.

| WOW I love that tank!!! That is a fantastic size for a betta. It looks very large, much larger than a ten gal tank. I love that it is not that high and its perfect for the Betta who do not really care to have to swim up high for air. I would love to find that type of tank around here. I love your set up and decorations and silk plants!!! YEP.. Teddy Bear has to be very happy in his new home!!! Great job Dave & Stacy!!! ~ kate |

| That tank is huuuge. He's so lucky. I'd love to offer each of my girls a 10G, but only one of them has it, and she's sharing with soem corys. |

| Love the new tank...and I bet Teddy loves it too! I think I've seen that tank before somewhere. Did you get it at petco? |

| yes, it's from petco. it really is ideal for a betta even if the box picture has 15" of fancy guppies on it.
Thanks all, Teddy Bear is enjoying his new tank a lot, he's hesitant to go past the filter flow since it's stronger than what he's used to in the 2.5g tank but we're probably going to get him a hamster tube to let him swim past the current in the tube. Of course, he's spending a lot of time watching his new neighbor in the tank next door, Kairi.
we'll be definitely moving Angel and Mickey out of their 5g hex tanks into tanks like Teddy Bear's as we're able to. |

I did see that tank before at petco...I remember thinking the same thing, what a great Betta tank. |

| All of my guys are jealous. They have the room but theirs is more vertical and they want the horizontal room now. That will teach me to let them look over my shoulder at the screen. I love the tank and so do they.
Congratulations, Stacy and Dave and Teddy Bear!!

i've noticed that my room is always a couple degrees warmer than the rest of my house...i told my parents i would let them keep a 55 gal. in their room if they would buy it for me ...just to keep their room warm |

| i'm trying to remember who first brought up looking in the hamster
section for fun things for the Bettas, but we got the idea here and it went over so well with Mickey and his "picture frame cave" that we thought the hamster igloo would be worth a try for Teddy Bear.
It is great to have them in the room. Stacy has Aslan and Mickey by her and the other 4 Splendens are by the computer, 2 on each side. |

I liked Dave's aquarium setup so much that I bought an identical hamster cave for Sparkles. Looks like it might make a great hidey-hole for him, and he probably needs that. It is colored plastic, but the color is embedded, not painted on the outside. How do I know for sure it's safe? Also, how do I "condition" the toy? It came with a sticker which I removed easily and didn't seem to have any glue residue, but how do I know for sure? I rinsed it under hot water and am letting it soak overnight in untreated tap water.
Dave, can you please elaborate on your filtration setup with the new tank? I'm really, really interested in your tank.
All, would this be a suitable setup for my betta Sparkles plus three Kuhli loaches or three Corys? As if Sparkles is not amusing enough, I really want those additional clowny guys!
Another option is another Eclipse tank from Marineland. I think it would have to be the 12-gallon to handle the bio-load for Sparkles plus three loaches or Corys. I really think Marineland has their act together, and really like their BIO-wheel, in theory, at least. But their 12-gallon is so vertical. |

| the little plastic hamster igloo is just colored plastic and i felt it was safe to put in the tank.. safer than some fish decorations that have paint on them. Teddy Bear's starting to like it more as he gets used to it. it's hard to say for sure that any decoration is safe, but hamster decorations will have a good chance of being chewed on and i expect these companies making the hamster toys wouldn't want to be sued over dead hamsters.
the best way to clean something for the tank is to put it in a plastic container and soak it in the hottest tap water that you can, treating the water. even an hour or so is fine i think, but overnight works too. then i dry it real good and put it in the tank. the way you did it is fine too, even just rinsing something in warm water and drying it before putting it in the tank will work. but you can never be too safe.
the filtration on the tank is just a simple HOB filter that the tank came with and I put an airstone in along with a submersible heater. i'm planning to get another 2 of them this week if i can, depends on what's left in the fish budget.
the tank is 6.6g, so it would be good for a male betta and 4" more of fish, which would allow 2 corys or 1 kuhli loach. i think you could get away with 3 corys by doing more frequent water changes and cleaning, but 3 kuhlis wouldn't fit and just 1 would be lonely.
To do 3 Kuhli's, I'd recommend a 20g long tank. I believe the loaches have higher waste production than the corys so I'd want to be understocked with them. |

| i'm not sure what brand they are actually, they just had the UPC sticker on them.. probably store-brand.
we got Teddy Bear and Mickey a "T" section of hamster tube today. They've already been swimming thru their new tunnels.. i think we'll need to buy a bunch of tubing and give them all some tunnels to swim through. |
