| I've moved this one for you here so it gets the due attention it deserves, and is not buried in a really long post. Also, non-picture posts get removed periodically from the photo galleries, so you would have lost that info.
Now for the answer: first off, I think he's a really really really pretty fish. Well done on your find.
I believe he's a veiltail, and he's got a really special mask going on there. |

| So he's a Veiltail. Thanks guys. My grandma wanted me to get a pretty red one but I wanted a really beautiful fish. I just saw him outta the corner of my eye and picked up the cup he was in to look at him closer and saw that he was the best out of the lot. |

| Perhaps you were well inspired to not take a red one. They're supposed to be VERY feisty. Am talking Mr Flareman here. Quote:

| How can you tell how aggressive they are? |
| |
October 28th, 2007
|
| | Fish Master
| The more aggressive kind will stress itself out flaring at its own reflection in the glass. They'll nip at your finger, they'll go crazy if they as much as glance at another fish. Just more feisty. It's not a bad thing. Some people like a feisty temper in a betta. I am more one for gentle ones.
Does yours flare at all? (flap out the skin on its cheeks?). That's what they do to show they're not going to take this lying down. To challenge whatever perception of threat or invation they feel. |

| I havn't seen him ever do that yet, but I've only had him a week. I put my finger in there today to play with him but he only followed it and when I moved my finger towards him he ran away lol. Last edited by Commodore1; October 28th, 2007 at 07:20 AM.

| Oh, it sounds like you have yourself a gentle guy. Lucky you! This means you could even contemplate playing with the idea of a companion.
Do you have another tank at home in case it goes wrong? What I mean is, you could float the bag with your new fish (you can get advice as to what fish have minimum risk of aggression from a betta) and see how the betta reacts. If he's aggressive, then that's kind of a bad sign and you'd need to put your new fish in your spare tank instead.
There are all sorts of considerations, though, like the fact that there's only a limited number of fish which have a good chance of living peacefully with a betta, and the social requirements of that fish should it need to live in another tank.
But essentially yeah, the more gentle your betta, the more likely it is that it will be docile to a tankmate. |

| I was thinking of getting a couple of Cory's for him to hang out with, but if he doesn't like them I could put them in the goldfish tank. The Goldfish tank and Commodore's tank are both 28L. I have a 160L but me and my dad are going to make it into a tropical fish tank. We built our own stand and everything.
Do you think if I put a female fighter in that he'd be her friend cause i've read about them attacking the females. |

| Unfortunately a female fighter can only be placed with a male for short episodes of time, and under supervision. Basically, we're talking a few minutes at a time, and just for breeding. Splendens breeding is expensive, and often goes very wrong, so I'd leave it to the pros. So that's that for the female.
I think the corys would be fine in your tropical fish tank if things don't work out with the betta tank, but is the big tank ready? Because if things go wrong, you'll need a solution immediately.
28L is really on the small side, so I'd get either 3 pygmy corys, or 2 panda corys. They're reasonably small. The good news is they're tank cleaners.
I wouldn't go for otos just yet (they're another type of fish that can potentially go well with a betta) as these are really sensitive to water chemistry, so would need a well established tank (about 6 weeks minimum I'd say). |

| what size tank is commodore in?
if it's a 3 gal. or less, i wouldn't put anything else in there |

| Corys are great tankmates for a lot of Bettas. You do need a backup plan just in case he doesn't like them, but you also need a plan on feeding the corys without the Betta eating their food. Bettas can get constipated and die on algae wafers and veggie slices are probably better nutrition for corys. |

| That's what I thought. But I caught one of my females stuffing herself with cucumber. She was so bloated! So now I don't put cucumber in there anymore. But I think that's exceptional behaviour. |

| Commodore is in a 28L tank. Wouldn't the Cory's get burnt from the salt in the tropical tank and no I havn't set it up yet. Mum won't let me put the tank in the house until dad and I have put doors on the stand. |

| Are you putting Aquarium Salt in the tank? I'd highly recommend not using aquarium salt, except to treat certain diseases. It's not good for Bettas and builds up in a tank over time. and it would kill the corys or otos, any scaleless fish. |

| Not in Commodores tank, in my big 3 foot tropical fish tank when its done. We are making a salt water aquarium. |

| Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that happening to you. I'd never heard of that behaviour before. But two of mine did it. Could be because I dip the cucumber in Garlic Guard, so it smells like their worms. Quote:

| ah, i think we'd gotten the idea that it was a freshwater tank. Corys, like Bettas, are freshwater and would naturally quickly die in a saltwater environment. Quote:

| That's what I thinking. I was confusing myself as well. lol. I just bought a bristle nose catfish today for $6 bucks and I just brought him home. What I just realised is that if Commodore doesn't like him he'll have no where to go until my goldfish get back from my sisters place. Do you think if all doesn't go well I could put the sucker fish in a little container or something.
I feel a bit stupid cause I was just looking in the pet shop saw a catfish for $6 bucks and I happened to have $6.50 in my back pocket so I asked dad if I could buy him and he said yes. The stupid part is I forgot all about what you guys told me all because I had the right amount of money.
Hope all goes well though. Fingers crossed |

| fortunately Bettas will often get along with BN Plecos, you'll just want to see to it that they each eat their own food.
..and i think most of us can relate to being at a pet store with money & coming home with less money and an unplanned fish. |

| LOL. Cool. Well i've let my little guy out of his bag and he's inside a tyre ornament giving it the best clean ever and Commodore's just swimming around as usual. Commodore has his favourite rock that he squishes under then pops outta the other side. He does this for about a minute and I'm not exaggerating. For some reason he thinks it's fun lol. He does it after he's been fed lol. |

| Bettas LOVE to squeeze into small spaces! sometimes they get into trouble that way, but as long as they have a way to squeeze back out of the small spaces without scraping fins, it's all good fun. Commodore is definitely a playful one! |
