The only way to find out is to try it, if you have an available tank to put the betta if there is trouble. Even some fish not known for fin nipping seem unable to resist the slow moving, flowing fins of a betta. And some bettas are aggressive to other fish.

One type of fish I would feel safe placing with a betta would be cherry barbs. I've never seen one nip a fish at all.

One thing about mixing bettas with fast swimmers would be a feeding time. I would worry about the betta not getting any food. You might have to segregate him at feeding time to make sure he gets his portion.

They both have different types of food (but i think the platies would eat the bettas food too lol)

i wouldn't recommend it. when we first started out, we put 3 platys with our 1st male betta.. 1 platy lost 2 fins and another lost a fin. Otos, cories and snails are the best tankmates for a betta, although bettas are best without tankmates.

Keep a very close eye on them. Personally I wouldn't trust Platys to be nice to something with long shiny fins....
But, if your Platys decide to play nice and the Betta doesn't object to tankmates, it could make a nice setup.
