How to slow down water current?

The new betta is struggling a bit with the current created by the power filter. So, I moved the plant I have in there under the output. He still seems to be struggling some, as well as getting caught up in the plant once. Any other suggestions?

how about buying a decoration or sumthing to put directly in front of the output?

Maybe get some java moss and stick under the output part, or get some fern like plant and somewhat clog the intake tube so less water can get in, thusm making less water come out.

No java moss in any stores around here

Could clogging half of the output part help? The pebbles in the tank would fit in one half of the output nicely, to at least deflect some of the water. Is this a good idea or could that somehow do more bad than good?

You can take a good sized piece of filter sponge, get an elastic band and secure the sponge over the outflow. Add as much as you need to nearly eliminate the water movement.

This will not harm your filter or slow down the filter process. It merely disperses the water a great deal so hardly any movement is felt by your betta.

The pebble/marble clogging up half seems to be doing the trick. He's able to swim around much better now. Might try the filter sponge idea later. Thanks everyone!

I just thought of a very basic and easy way to do it, if it has the little knob to control the water flow, adjust that to what you want and there you go. If not, just ignore this.

I found that even when I turned the current down my bettas would still try to swim in the current as they were fascinated by it. They had always been in still water and the movement just was so NEW to them that they could not get used to playing in it. He will still probably want to go and play in it and may even get hung up again but let him play a bit as he is getting his exercise and building up his muscles to build up strength to be able to better handle playing in moving water. It is good for him once he gets the side muscles built up. But the process of building up those muscles is going to be tiring for him and he will need you to be watchful for him so he does not get hung up somewhere. He may also be cranky for a while until he gets over being pushed, but he will be a much happier betta when he becomes stronger and can play in the current and bubbles. They do love that.

He is doing great with the new set up. He can still play in the current without it stressing him out. He looked like he was struggling some. Later on, might take the pebble out and see how he does, but this will get him a pretty good start to getting used to the current.
