My Breeding Bettas

I have just successfully breed my first female betta fish. We have this tank in our office and it has been so rewarding and fascinating to watch this process. The little fry are now 3 days old and Dad is just being fantastic. We should be removing the male this week some time and we are all eagerly awaiting the weeks and months to pass so we can see the growth of the little ones. I have found your instructions on the website the easiest and most helpful on breeding bettas. I have a short video clip of the spawning process but cannot up load onto the website due to the size. If any one would like a CD version I would be most happy to send to you.

welcome to FishLore! congratulations on success with breeding Bettas. Do you have everything in place for the fry stage when you'll seperate them?

www.youtube.com might accept your video and you could post the link to it in a post here. I think the limit there is 150 mb.

My Betta Fry - Some Advice Would Help

Hey All,

Thanks for the messages. The babies are really cute. 1 Week old from egg to babies and swimming around. I have started breeding some brine shrimp Eggs and will give them their first food today. Hopefully this is okay. According to the article for breeding I will only have to separate after about 2 - 3 months. Once the males start showing.
Currently the tank is set up with the foam filter, heater, cling wrap over the top and lid to keep the air constant. I understand that after about 2 weeks I can start water changes, this is making me a bit nervous. When can the cling wrap be removed so the air can circulate and the baby won't get sick.

On separating the babies (thanks to CoBettaCouple). I had thought to get 750ml bottles and put each male in one. Any other suggestions? How about water. Can they then be moved in fresh treated water.

I am afraid I don't have a lot of info on the fry growing up. So any help would be greatly appreciated

you want to change 50% of the water daily when they're in the small containers. the way to keep them warm is to heat the room they're in (cheaper than heating all those containers individually). the females can stay together longer than the males usually, but they also reach a point that they'll need seperated into individual containers.

i'd keep an eye on them. every batch is different and it's a guessing game when the territorial nature will kick in. When it starts you'll want to be ready to seperate them so the tank doesn't turn into a war zone.

You will also need to be sure to mix a lot of replacement water daily and make sure never to use the water until it has sat for 24 hours to condition and to reach the room temperature (make sure it sits in the room the jars are located in so it will equal the temperature in the jars) so you do not change the temperature of the fry jars. This is when their fins are forming and if the water quality is not kept at the best possible, their fins will be deformed or they will die. Be brave as this stage will last a long time (like at least 2 months) and do not miss any days no matter what as it takes no time at all for the ammonia and nitrites to build up and that will be that. There are not second chances with fish at this stage. You cannot medicate for problems or go back to correct a bad water quality that you had yesterday.

Have fun watching them grow and send pictures when you can, we do love pictures.
