Is this fin rot or something else?

Ricktavious started to get little holes in his two "hangy-down" fin things.....they are getting progressively bigger despite water changes, medicated pellets, and extra vitamins. Should I bust out the triple sulfa? Don't know if it's fin rot or not, but I do know the holes have gotten noticably larger in the last day.

By the way, where the holes are do not look ragged....just started out small, ended up bigger (especially in the last few hours)!

Re: Is this fin rot or something else?

I have seen one of my females (Karma) suddenly get a hole in the middle of her tail and the next day it was healed completely... I'm not sure what caused it but it went away before I could even start treatment.
You could try doing a good cleaning and big water change and do partial water changes everyday and see if it goes away. Add vitamins if you have them too. If it does start to get bigger then break out the triple sulfa.

Re: Is this fin rot or something else?

The holes have both gotten bigger, but by looking closely, it looks like he might have had some tissue "die off." He had that happen once before. Not too sure what could be causing it, he gets 2%-40% of his water changed a week, gets vitamins every day (been getting them extra since his fin rot has been healing). None of the other fins have ever had this happen. Any suggestions on what I could do to improve the problem?

Re: Is this fin rot or something else?

This used to happen to RJ a lot especially when he was in the 5 gallon which is weird because soon after I put him in the 2.5 gallon all the holes he had in his top fin and lower fins cleared up. I'm not sure why. I thought they would've gotten worse because he was going in a smaller home with Fred ( my oto cat) and I thought for sure that the bio load was going to be too much for him and it wasn't at all. He got better instead. It was very strange. I guess you can always start medicating him before it gets any worse as you said it's already started too. I hope it clears up soon. Natalie
