Having problems with temperature

Right now, we in Tennessee are in the midst of a terrible heat wave, and on top of that the AC in my apartment really, really sucks. When I woke up this morning, the tank water was at 85 degrees (that's also how hot it was in my room thanks to some idiot deciding to turn the AC off :). I turned the air back on, fan on high, and the water temp is slowly climbing back down. Hopefully it starts cooling down here soon and people leave the air on, haha!

Re: Having problems with temperature

I have zero tolerance for heat myself. The apt is kept at 65F all the time. All my tanks NEED heaters because I like it cold! I have central air and TWO large mobile life support systems, all for a one bedroom apt.
The temp here in Toronto is well over 90F for almost every day of the summer. It's just one long endless heatwave. I would not even have fish if I didn't have A/C. It would be impossible to keep from cooking the fish in those temps.

Re: Having problems with temperature

Yeah, I'm hoping this doesn't become a problem. It's not a heater problem (not plugged in right now), but is it possible the filter thing could be overheating? Also, besides getting the temp down in my room, what steps can I take to lower the water temp (and keep it lower)?

Re: Having problems with temperature

You could try very slowly adding cooler water to the tank to bring it down and see if you can point the fan towards the tank (at the sides of the tank) to keep the surrounding air cooler which may help cool the water.
Maybe see about buying a window unit A/C for your room either now or by next summer. You can even buy used ones for around $30 which may still work okay.

Re: Having problems with temperature

I doubt that the apartment allows the window units (they are strict on stuff like that), but I'll be here alone next summer and will be able to keep it as cool as I want, haha. I did a small water change with some cooler water. The temp is still heading down

Re: Having problems with temperature

I wouldn't worry too much about it...a short-term temp of 85 won't hurt anything.

Re: Having problems with temperature

Seems to be stuck at 83 degrees now for whatever reason. Got fans and AC going, but it's still a bit warm in my room. Hopefully by morning it'll be better

Re: Having problems with temperature

the other day we saw portable cooling units (basically a fan you can put ice in) at walmart for $50. We would have a couple of them now if we weren't moving to Denver with how hot it's been lately.

Re: Having problems with temperature

Temps are back to normal, both in my room and the tank now. Since I've moved back here, haven't been able to play with getting the heater on the temp I want, but finally, I've been able to this morning. Things are finally getting back to normal
