Feeding Her Majesty

Hey all,

Well, my fish moving is complete, and Artemis is very happy in her new 15 gal home. She's so cute when she naps in her Anubias Nana, and anytime I walk by the tank, she swims up with a look of "you may now pay homage to my glorious self" ( ). I have a question though, and maybe you could help. She shares the tank with her cardinals and corries (notice that they're "her" fish?). I feed the cardinals a tiny pinch of flakes each night, and the corries get an algae tab after the lights go out (otherwise Artemis has a tendency to swim away with it, little stinker). I also give Artemis a couple of the betta pellets for dinner, but she'll sometimes eat some of the flakes too. This is the way that I was doing things even before they were moved to the larger tank, and I never had a problem with her being sick or constipated or anything, but I wonder if she's being overfed. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

~Kelly

Re: Feeding Her Majesty

This is what I often read is being advised when someone thinks their betta might be overfed.

If you're in doubt, a days' fasting a week won't hurt. Also, a weekly treat of peas will clear her nicely.

Re: Feeding Her Majesty

Well, the betta should be okay, but the cories are not algae eaters. They should be getting shrimp pellets or sinking carnivore wafers. If you are looking for algae eaters, otos will be the best bet but the cories will not consistently eat the algae wafers as they need protein foods.

Re: Feeding Her Majesty

My mistake, I used algae wafers as a generic term. They're getting the sinking wafers that are made specifically for catfish.

Artemis got some pea for dinner tonight, and after realizing that it sinks faster than her typical pellets, gobbled it right up and begged for more. I'll try fasting her a day a week like you mentioned. Thanks for the advice!
