WOW did I luck out!!!

Went to visit my sister yesterday in Minnesota and she told me of this little pet shop. So I went their, first thing I asked was about Bio Spira -- can't believe it, they had it! $13.99 !!!!!!!! ( enough for 30g) I almost kissed the guy, cause I hadn't ordered it yet from F&S since we had left home so early in the morning.

He had bettas also, however, they were all in large bowls, with pristine clean water.........all looking beautifully healthy and active. So I knew he was a good guy. And it didn't smell in there at all, just like a regular store.............just a few bunnies, birds, 5 kitties all vetted up; many aquariums, all sparkling clean; reptiles, mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, none with cages full of !! Full line of Mardel and Kordon products!! Whisper filters ( of which I also bought 2 for emergencies) God was smiling on me yesterday!!

I ended up buying a couple silk plants, bio spira, some neat aquarium decorations ( some very smooth caves with lots of swim throughs) , gravel, etc. He didn't have the dividers, but no matter, mine will be in tomorrow, as long as I don't have to line up at the border to get across. Then I was worried about leaving the Bio S in the car , so he gave me a cooler with an ice pack. I couldn't quit thanking him, what a neat guy, great customer service, talked to me about using Bio Spira and making sure not to overfeed. I went out to the car, then went back in and bought 2 new flourescent bulbs for the 10g, and to thank him again. I like being reminded that there are neat people left in the world.

Not to mention, my sister and I visit back and forth all the time, so I now have a source for Bio Spira...$13.99............would have been $40USD to get it from F&S. I also saw a beautiful 20 or 30g tank on a beautiful wooden stand with doors ( looked like furniture) for $189 ....so tempted.........for a community tank. Wait for that one!!

So if I can pick up the dividers over the border tomorrow, Wink Jack Sparrow and Tiny King will be in their tank by Saturday..........I can hardly breathe I am so excited!!!

Can't believe still that I found Bio Spira....................

Yayyyyyyyyyyy. Val

lol that's awesome!!! I love hearing stories like that...

...I've never seen biospira... does it prevent the nitrogen cycle to hurt the fish?

Re: WOW did I luck out!!!

It's a bag of the good nitrifiers that you need for a cycled tank and usually gives you a cycled tank within 24 hours and the ability to put fish in right away.

Me neither..........two years ago, one opened here, and they had a lot of kittens and puppies; large birds; large reptiles and the usual amt of small critters; birds and fish.. I was kinda familiar witht he woman who opened it and thought she was wingy. ( Says I...hmmmmmmmmm)

Anyway, being a kitty lover, I went in to buy some treats...........the place would knock you over. Everything smelled, it was dirty everywhere, little kitties andpuppies had poop all over themselves and their cages and the floor, along with bird poop and green aquariums/terrariums..

Sooooooooo knowing this would never do, I spoke to my vet, and we agreed that although she meant well........she was loony. I started going in there and keeping track of stuff. I called the SPCA who unfortunately only has officers 60 mi from here. I did this whole covert operation ( ha ha ) for the SPCA and they came down to inspect. She got a warning and letter to comply, ( did you know even mice in a pet store have a standard they are to be kept in - it is all very interesting..ie. so many inches of cage per inch of animal ( no kidding) ) ( Well at least in Canada ) So she did not, and first they took all the puppies, kittens and big birds ....after 30 days the reptile tanks and aquariums and small animal tanks were still disgusting - they came in and closed her down. I had to do a written deposition and all...I felt like one of Charlies Anglels..............(didn't say I looked like one - LOL)

So Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.........I got her closed down and they took all of the living things. It was the proudest day of my life!

And that, my friends, is some indication of me personally and also why I had to have a pink streak put in my blonde hair yesterday at the hairdressers................ ..........my husband just looked at me and says " Well, okay then............then this morning he said it was fun & funky.................surely I ramble.

( It's the same colour as Tiny King....LOL)

That is my story........................ Val

Re: WOW did I luck out!!!

Ooooh, I want to see the hair. It can totally work on fair hair. Great idea I think. I looooooooove that it's the same colour as your latest betta. LMAO.

Wow, interesting epic the pet store. I'd totally do the same but I know that the laws here in The Netherlands are nowhere near as focused on the animal's welfare. Do you know what's happened to the animals? Have they put them down? Gawd, I hope not.

Do you know if (at least in Canada) there are laws about minimum living standards for pet fish?

The critters were all adopted out, with help from the vet involved. It was great!!

I don't know for sure about care standards for fish, but I should see if I can find it..

And yes, Tiny King loves my hair too.........well the pink part.............it's weird, it really makes me feel happy!!

LOL, yea i hear you.. that's why i put in "usually".. even biospira's not 100%.. the bacteria can die pretty easy and it's not unheard of for a LFS/LPS to sell outdated items.

You are my hero! I would do exactly the same thing for any animal. I have zero tolerance for animal cruelty, whether it's deliberate or not. It's just plain common sense and if someone doesn't have the sense to know better they should never be allowed to run a business selling living creatures or own pets. Too bad we can't figure a way to get the "Betta vase lady" shut down! :

Re: WOW did I luck out!!!

I am not surprised about the hair giving a spring to your step. It's a really cool thing to do and I'll bet you look really cool with it. You're tempting me to do the same (not pink, of course)!

Amanda, do you find that your hair is ALL OVER your tank? I have that problem. It's really disgusting, I'll find a strand of my hair attached to every plant.

Re: WOW did I luck out!!!

lol.. I have found some of my hair in the tank. I always tie it back when I do something over there. (I even have a hairclip clipped to the stand for that!! Or else I'd have tankwater-washed hair!)

However, if I find a hair in there, I feel so guilty!! haha

We call something else the magic hair, and it's often found in beds and showers. Must the regional difference.
