Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

How horrendous! I'm a new betta parent but it only takes 24/48 hours to realise that they are not just a fishy. I'm in uk so i never see these horrific sights ( not used that way here ) However i do see them kept in tanks with nasty fin nippers. TOTAL IGNORANCE world wide!!

if only fish could talk.. or even make noise.. that's sad and anyone buying those won't ever get to really see what a betta is like.

Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

To use yet another platitude: "What goes around, comes around"....in my mind's eye I see a lot of these weirdo uninformed fish/animal people stuck somewhere between heaven and , in jars of water with no air or heat or company or food...............

Val.....I am getting crazier by the minute reading all these sad things!!!

Some fish can make sounds. But I know what you mean.
That is horrible. Don't think your complaining didn't go without any consideration, if they get more complaints, then they would think more of taking them out of the store and in a real pet store. YOu could go back and say to them, 'If you don't remove these fish, I will have to tell all my friends and people I know to not come shop here and I won't ever be back myself'. All stores hate when they have to make a big choice like that.

my fish tells me when he is hungery or mad or sad. Like to train him to feed from my hand though.

Sad but that is true, here in Davao City, Philippines, here are just some of those bettas in jars that you are talking about....bettas in small mayonnaise jars. Its worse when you go to our local petshops, all bettas in small plastic cups

Pretty much, most all the pet stores here have the small plastic cups with Bettas. I'd love that white male in the last pic.

Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

if you can find the minibow 2.5g tank kits, they're not too bad at wal-mart and probably the cheapest way to get a small tank. especially if a store has a sale on them or something.

Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

OMG, those pics break your heart!! Ok UK isn't brill for the bettas i have seen but to imagine Honey or Flame in a jar makes me sick!

But it is not just fish, there are SOOOOOOO many arrogant, ignorant, selfish humans on this planet that see other life forms as objects and profit!

I am with Val, 'What goes around, comes around' i REALLY believe this. One day something will bite them on the butt!!

Yeah, but I mean a lot of other, non-Fishlorians are also kind to animals and humans. Most of the people I know are OK, really.

Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

Yeah that's a problem with my friends too. They seem to think that we've gone too far with the whole fish welfare thing - which am sure we have as our fish are soooo spoilt - but as a result, they take all my advice to be equally exagerated, and their fish don't live in such good conditions. It's sad.

Yep, they don't realize, and we don't have enough credit that they will believe us, as we're seen as extreme fish geeks anyway.

MAN! That smiley with the cup of coffee is evil. It keeps making me want coffee. Then I click away and forget, then am in a post again and bang! Cuppa? Mmmmh, I think I will.

Re: more jarred bettas in grocery store

any fish or animal that enters OUR homes can be assured that they will be safe/loved/cared for to the BEST of our knowledge and ability. A big thing for them because of their start in life.

Just as human parents we may not get it right all of the time but our hearts are 100pc in trying!!

Thank you. I was thinking of going to some of our LFS here, (I think we have around more than 30 already just in Davao City alone!) and maybe just put one or two 2.5 gallon tank showcasing one beautiful betta so that they can see how beautiful a betta can be when placed in a tank that can really show off its true beauty. I was successful enough to convince one petshop owner to come up with around 60 pieces of 5 inches x 9 inches x 9 inches glass tanks in which to display the bettas he's selling in his store. He says a lot of his customers have started buying bettas because they were able to see the beauty of bettas clearly in the new tanks he made.

The last pic is a gold halfmoon. If you're nearer here, I could send it to you as a gift and as a sign of my appreciation for all the help you have given me here! Fishlore is truly the best!!! Learned a lot from this forum.
