"Harro Hieronimus, chair of the German Livebearer Society and the International Rainbowfish Association, was asked to create for the German Ministry of Agriculture a set of minimum requirements for the humane care of fish. His expert opinion has been translated into law in Germany. He maintains that fish must have a minimum volume of 13 gallons of water in an aquarium approximately 24 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches in size. Hieronimus states, "Keeping fish permanently in smaller tanks is cruelty against animals and [in Germany] may be prosecuted by law." "
Wow! If only Canada and the US were so evolved! I'd love to see people get arrested and fined for animal cruelty for keeping Bettas in those
betta kits or bowls! I do disagree though that female Bettas should be kept together. I'd really like to know why people insist that this can be done when many of us here have tried and failed. The females are VERY stressed even if they don't kill each other. Also, making it law that Bettas must have 10 gallon tanks means far fewer Bettas will get homes as who has room for so many 10 gallon tanks? Mine are doing fine in 5 gallon tanks. I think as long as the tank is big enough to be heated and filtered it should be good, and that means 2.5 gallons and up.
I noticed on the PETA site that they are urging people to write in to complain to various companies and Petsmart is one they have targeted. They provide an address to write to the president. They say if enough people complain and KEEP complaining that these companies will have to change sooner or later. I agree. It takes time and persistance but they can't ignore us forever!
I think we should all write to PETA and send them the Betta vase lady's web address and ask them to try to convince her to stop!
