Re: someone should send this to the betta vase lady

"Harro Hieronimus, chair of the German Livebearer Society and the International Rainbowfish Association, was asked to create for the German Ministry of Agriculture a set of minimum requirements for the humane care of fish. His expert opinion has been translated into law in Germany. He maintains that fish must have a minimum volume of 13 gallons of water in an aquarium approximately 24 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches in size. Hieronimus states, "Keeping fish permanently in smaller tanks is cruelty against animals and [in Germany] may be prosecuted by law." "

Wow! If only Canada and the US were so evolved! I'd love to see people get arrested and fined for animal cruelty for keeping Bettas in those betta kits or bowls! I do disagree though that female Bettas should be kept together. I'd really like to know why people insist that this can be done when many of us here have tried and failed. The females are VERY stressed even if they don't kill each other. Also, making it law that Bettas must have 10 gallon tanks means far fewer Bettas will get homes as who has room for so many 10 gallon tanks? Mine are doing fine in 5 gallon tanks. I think as long as the tank is big enough to be heated and filtered it should be good, and that means 2.5 gallons and up.

I noticed on the PETA site that they are urging people to write in to complain to various companies and Petsmart is one they have targeted. They provide an address to write to the president. They say if enough people complain and KEEP complaining that these companies will have to change sooner or later. I agree. It takes time and persistance but they can't ignore us forever!
I think we should all write to PETA and send them the Betta vase lady's web address and ask them to try to convince her to stop!

Re: someone should send this to the betta vase lady

i dont know if you have seen them but theres these pretty betta jars at petco about half the size of the cup they come in! they definetly cant turn around in there. anyways and about the betta thing. well if people were only aloud to put bettas in 10 g, people woul stop mass producing them sooner or later, there would be fewer bettas left in horrible conditions and more happily wild.

Re: someone should send this to the betta vase lady

As long as there is money to be made people will be mass-producing them. Home breeding is another big issue. It's very difficult to find homes for so many Bettas and many just end up being born to be food for larger fish. Too many kids want to breed their fish with no thought as to what to do with the babies afterwards.
Maybe if the government regulated breeding of ALL animals and didn't allow over breeding and didn't allow people to own cats and dogs that were not spayed or neutered unless they were regulated breeders then the whole world would be a happier place and every animal would find a good home. Animal cruelty should be punishable by life in prison not a stupid fine or slap on the wrist!

That seems highly unlikely. Americans don't want to be evolved. We want to drive SUV's, eat quarter pounders, and complain about elected officials when we didn't bother to vote. It's a nice thought though.

Hmmm...I'm even better...I drive a used two-seater pickup! And just wait a minute, we wouldn't want to pollute our sun...better send them to another galaxy....

Oh yeah, didn't think of the poor other galaxy's residents. Even the fish aliens don't deserve to get politicians. Black hole is a good idea.

Thanks, LolaGurl. Am definitely going to use this link in my letter. Thanks for that! Does anybody else have good sources disputing the myth that bettas can live in vases?

Re: someone should send this to the betta vase lady

Thanks soooo much. This is really helpful.

I checked the first link and it's perhaps even more ideal than the second, as it's directly targetted against vases. The second one would take a more subtle reader, which, judging by the tone of their letter to em, I cannot expect of them.

Do you have any book references too? I have a couple of books too that state the same.

I believe that 2nd link references some books. I wish i had some book titles, but we don't have any betta books. (online generation and all )
