How would a pleco do with barbs?

I really doubt a pictus would be chewed on by the barbs...they are lightning fast, always moving, and can use those barbels as defensive weopons if necessary (though they are geneerally only defensive as they do not attack provided their tankmates aren't tiny enough to be edible, i.e. guppies or neon tetras). Further, on the rare occasion that they do rest, they tend to do so in caves or other hiding places, which makes it unlikely the barbs would catch them unawares.
If you do get some though, make sure your fish store either uses a proper catching tool or is prepared to lose their net because their barbels tend to snag the nets and often the only way to free them is by cutting the net around the barbel (my
LFS insisted on using a net and succeeded for two but then snagged the third and had to cut the net apart to free him...he had a bit of net on one barbel for a few days before it worked itself free, but he was unharmed). For the same reason, make sure they are at least double-bagged to help prevent leaks, and avoid using a net to move them yourself.
