Feeding Nori

We had two Bamboo shrimp that we ordered from a place online and one survived the trek. He's in beautiful shape, seems to be eating the free-flowing stuff in the tank, and has a gorgeous colour to him. What I was wondering is that I read that you feed them Nori as a supplement? Like, regular grocery store Nori? I just toss it in the tank?

Thanks.

Bamboo shrimp are filter-feeders, right? If so, they prefer not to have to pick at their food. It damages their feelers. In fact, if you see them picking at food, rather than perching in the current and waving their arms around, that means that they're not getting enough food.

That being said, you can feed your fish some nori (they'll love it too), which will introduce some nitrogen, phosphorous, and vitamins and minerals to the tank, which will fuel algae growth, which will keep the bamboo shrimp happy and healthy. Just don't overdo it.

Thanks.

Boo seems to be just fine hanging about working food into his mouth by waving his arms - and isn't picking around for any. Good thing we have the perfect plant for him in the current then too.

I read that you put in a 2" piece of Nori once a month, is this correct? I wouldn't want to overdue it, but it does sound beneficial to the community, not just Boo the wonder shrimp.

Thanks again.

I'd spread it out, doing little bits on different days, but a 2" square in a month sounds like a great supplement for a 60g tank (it would be a week's worth of herbivore meals in a 20g).

What is Nori? I have one of these shrimp and have never really fed anything other than flake powder, bbs, and algae disks. He is healthy as he just molted today so he is not starving.

Would Nori also be a good food for clams? I have 2 of them.

Nori is just a term for seaweed - you know the kind they use for sushi? I bought it at the grocery store and haven't added it yet, but plan on it as soon as I can find a plastic clip to put in the aquarium.

Not sure re: clams. Hopefully someone knows and posts.

Thanks sirdarksol for the info.

i'm not sure if nori would be good for clams. wouldn't the particles be too big for the clams to ingest?

what do you feed your clams?

I drop powdered flake into the tank and it will move around the water with the current. They seem to be getting enough to eat. They also get to eat the bbs that escape the breeder trap, I spray some into the tank as well though. It being a fry tank there is no shortage of small form factor food.
